Your vs. You're happens to be both my pet peeve and one of the most common grammatical mistakes on YWS. Every time I see something like "That was great! Your awesome!" I die a little inside. XD Because I'm tired of typing my explanation over and over, I have written up this brief and easy guide. :)

Your is possesive, as in "Your bicycle is over there," and "Is this yours?"

You're is a contraction, as in "You're my favorite person," and "I don't know what you're talking about."

General rule: Look at your sentence. If you can replace whatever you have with "you are," use you're. If not, use "your."

So, now it's your turn!
;)

What is the proper word for each of these sentences?

1."If [your/you're] hungry, then you should probably eat something."
2."I can't read [you're/your] handwriting."
3."[Your/You’re] a good writer!"

If you had trouble of any of those, please read the beginning again. And please don't be lazy when editing your work.

Well I would just say youer being a nitpicker. :smt002
I completely agree, very common mistake that even adults make, constantly. In a writing community it should be akin to being branded.
Has that ever been considered? A Hawthorne-ish Lettering system of cardinal sins.... :backtotopic:

Oh, I always get this wrong, haha.
The general rule is a good one, I'll use that from now on.
Thank you (:

This is great. Showing that "you're" is a contraction of the two words "you are", and "your" shows possession of something, really helps everyone.
