Hey guys. My novel is going through the last stages of editting so I'm starting to do research on how to get an agent and get published and such. Do you have any tips? Do I need to have a title before I send my manuscript/query letters off? Is there anything I should know?

Yes, you need a title before you send query letters.

Also, compile a list of agents you want to query. Sort them according to how much you want that agent. Then start querying, working your way from the top of the list to the bottom.

Your query must shine and be near-perfect. Your first few pages must be attention-grabbing and amazing. You also ought to have a synopsis ready.

You should post your query letter up for critique somewhere. You'll also want to submit to agents alone - submitting to publishers might burn your chances later on.

Only turn to publishers if you can't get an agent.

For advice on queries, http://www.queryshark.blogspot.com/ is pretty good. This is pretty good too http://jmeadows.livejournal.com/tag/query%20project.

For general advice you might want to head on to http://blog.nathanbransford.com/. And to track your queries this is pretty good -http://querytracker.net/. If you're looking for a list of agents that represents your genre (I'm assuming young adult?) this is a pretty good site - http://www.agentquery.com/.

Good luck and God bless with querying! Remember, one rejection isn't the end of the world. Don't reply to a rejection snarkily. In fact, don't reply at all unless it's a very personalized one. Then you can send a thank you for the notes.

Sincerely,

Kara
