When Schadel H. Kueper turns twenty-one, she’s sure of one thing: she wants to try living on her own. For as long as she can remember, she’s lived with her older brother, Peregrine Baines, in his antique shop in New York City. But Schadel’s tired of the rushing of the city, and she knows exactly where she wants to move to. After putting together all of her savings and getting her brother’s very reluctant blessing, she heads off to South Haven, Connecticut—also known as the state’s ghost capitol.

South Haven has been plagued by ghost hunting TV shows and enthusiasts for years. It’s the perfect place for Schadel’s Necromancy Agency, a group dedicated to solving conflicts between the living and the deceased. Armed with years of seeing ghosts, a ghostly business partner named Claire Fortier, and a whole lot of enthusiasm, Schadel is ready to tackle whatever South Haven throws her way.

...Except for Liz Novelo, a young woman who dismissed a ghost hunter on live TV back in middle school and hasn’t lived it down ever since. Add in Liz’s strange younger brother, Eli, who spends the majority of the school year at an elite private school, and it’s clear that Schadel has her work cut out for her.

But as long as Schadel stays positive, she’s sure she can win Liz over and convince her to work at the agency. So maybe she has a little crush on her. Maybe Schadel’s keeping secrets of her own that Liz is starting to get suspicious about. And maybe there’s a weird guy wearing a trench coat and bandages that’s trying to track Schadel down. It doesn’t matter.

Schadel has to prove that she can do this on her own. The only other option is returning to living with her brother, and Schadel knows she won’t be able to survive working in the family business.
