This is my end-of-the-world-ish project idea for the Summer Novella Challenge. ^^

Summary:

At first, everyone ignored the appearance of red eyes and foaming mouths. No one could ignore the blood-drenched body that appeared the following week. That sent dozens of families packing and fleeing during the day when the infections seemed far too fictional and unrealistic if it weren’t for the growing death count.

A few curious, fearless, and dangerous (or a combined of these traits) individuals decided to stay, for all sorts of reasons that they may or may not be open to discussing.

-

The backstory for the story:

To start, four of the five doctors at the small hospital were trying to think of a way to counter against an aggressive strand of the flu. They inserted a developing drug, packed with the flu as well, into one of themselves, with rather troubling results. Their colleague grew even sicker than any of the current patients until they ended up attacking everyone in the hospital, of about ten people who were in varied states of not-feeling-good.

- Character Profiles

- Four main ones

Pallo Wurensky (non-binary, uses neo-pronouns {ey/em/eir}, asexual), Terrianne Mead (lesbian trans woman, shop owner), Homen Jiyere (trans male, pansexual-ish), Meriel Ocanas (lesbian cis female, shop owner).

1)

Dr. Pallo Wurensky

Spoiler! :
Story Role: Main character
Occupation: Medical doctor, worked at local hospital

-----

Physical Description: Early 30s, medium-sized build. Ey has dyed light blue hair, brown eyes, and wears eir hair pulled back tightly. Ey typically wears old, loose clothing as ey had been in the hospital with a lab coat most of eir day until the infection spread rapidly.
Personality: Ey tends to be pretty quiet, letting most of the other doctors or even the rest of the people who end up staying talk over different ideas, only interjecting when the science part comes into play, as ey knows way more than everyone else combined.
Habits/Mannerisms: Not talking much, literally staying off to the side of the room when others are chatting. In addition to waving off people trying to come up to em, ey will even simply write down notes sometimes when ey doesn't want to speak up.

-----

Background: Grew up in cold Michigan, went to U of Mich, eventually graduated with a doctorate in medical biology, then really scrounged to find a job. Within the last six months, ey found a position at the Arroville hospital, only to kind of curse eir rotten luck at ending up in the town that infection started in.
Internal Conflicts: Struggling to speak up, wanting to help others especially when ey knows they're wrong and could seriously injure themselves, as well as seriously worried that ey could catch the infection despite any sort of precautions.
External Conflicts: First, of course, the infected that could kill em, as well as having to find enough food and water to sustain emself.

-----

Notes:

2)

Terrianne Mead

Spoiler! :
Story Role: Main character
Occupation: Shop owner, convenience store, Tears.

-----

Physical Description: About 25, tall-ish. Olive-toned skin, dark hair, dark eyes. Usually is found in long-sleeve dresses, with her hair tied into a pony-tail, slight use of make-up. Post-infection look is the same, but without any make-up.
Personality: She’s a pretty friendly store owner, likes to chat up customers as she rings them up. If someone messes with her, or they try to trick her, then Terria can turn angry and not let herself get dragged around. And if she sees Meriel, then, she’s on yell-mode all the time.
Habits/Mannerisms: She’ll smile at every customer, try to help them out if they’re looking for something in particular. From there, she’ll mess with her hair if she’s done something with it. If Meriel is around, she’ll start yelling and growing red in the face quickly.

-----

Background: Grew up in Tucson with her mother's family, moved to Arroville when she was a teenager, to live with her father’s side. Inherited the shop (used to be called Halt And Walt) after her dad two years ago, right when Meriel started her shop across the street. Terria used to be best friends with Meriel in high school, but they went their separate ways and started to greatly dislike each other once their parents got into their own kind of conflict. From there, tension has built between them, and the infection doesn’t help this at all.
Internal Conflicts: Anger towards Meriel stems from severely missing her and having feelings for her, so struggles between wanting to protect the other and trying to hide true feelings.
External Conflicts: Definitely not trying to get killed by zombies or fired-up Meriel at first. At least there’s a lot of food in the store at the beginning.

-----

Notes:

3)

Noah Jiyere

Spoiler! :
Story Role: Main character
Occupation: Inbetween jobs, formerly a police officer.

-----

Physical Description: About 27, mid-range height. Short, naturally dirty-blond hair. Gray eyes, usually hidden behind sunglasses, even inside buildings. He tends to wear flannel shirts tucked into baggy long shorts.
Personality: Likes to make really cheesy jokes, mostly quietly to himself. He's always made sure to protect who he sees as the "most-in-need-of-help," which in this case is his cousin Cindem, as he practically raised the kid. Doesn't show his true emotions most of the time.
Habits/Mannerisms: Runs right into danger, chews on his lip/tugs at his hair. He makes funny faces to try to lighten the mood and hopefully make everyone less stressed. Sometimes he'll break down quietly once everyone is asleep.

-----

Background: Noah was born to a single mother in Central California, but passed away after he graduated high school. His aunt got in contact with him, that he had an eight-year-old cousin that would love to meet him, but they were in Arizona. From there, he decided to move to Arrowville on his nineteenth birthday, meeting Cindem and vowing then and there to forever to take care of them. When the outbreak happened, he had let Cindem go alone to the store, only for them to come back infected.
Internal Conflicts: First, Noah's steaming with guilt that he happened to make his cousin sick and slowly dying. In addition, he's fearful for all the others in their small group, and constantly struggles with wanting to protect everyone and not lose any members.
External Conflicts: Don't die, have food, find some way to save Cindem, which includes getting himself in grave danger in the quest to get Dr. Pallo necessary equipment.

-----

Notes:

4)

Meriel Ocanas

Spoiler! :
Story Role: Main character
Occupation: Shop owner, Las Flores, clothes store.

-----

Physical Description: Around 25, on the shorter side of things. Half Caucasian/Hispanic appears white. Has dark brown hair that’s around her shoulders, also dark brown eyes. Typical wear consists of slightly curled hair parted in half, in short-sleeved graphic-tees and skirts.
Personality: Has an easy smile for customers and family members/friends the like but gets rather flustered around Terrianne. Her mood can shift easily from happy-go-lucky to cannot-stand-her but she tries to still stay professional. Somewhat.
Habits/Mannerisms: Blushes quite often, but usually with a wide grin. Carries a lucky ring with her that once was a present from Terria, and absently will rub over it when she gets worried. From there, she is prone to "messing/poking" at someone when she feels stressed or wants to change the group's current mood.

-----

Background: Mother's family originally from Mexico, father's family is from England. Thus, she grew up not speaking Spanish, but with some of the Mexican traditions such as learning certain dances and food dishes. Her joint family moved to Arrowville when she was young, met Terrianne in high school, then fell apart from her when their parents accused each other of somehow undermining the other's business. She didn't really understand that but ended up taking over her mother's clothes shop either way.
Internal Conflicts: She wishes she could smooth out the rough edges between her and Terria in someway but is also seriously freaked out by the illness and worries for everyone's health. She feels a little useless in what she can really do to help.
External Conflicts: Similar to the others, she doesn't want to die and is faced with finding out sources of food, water, and shelter, while harboring a somewhat viable crush on her former best friend.

- Illness Details

Disease: unnamed for now

Type: (virus/bacteria/gene mutation) Environmental manipulation of genes, perhaps.

Origin: This was initially a partial accident, by the medical staff, in trying to help prevent further spreading of a vicious flu cycle. This plan, of course, did not go quite as planned.

Stages of disease: 1) typical bad flu; 2) A couple of days later, typically, will turn into the subject not being able to process food (throwing up, can't keep anything done), feels extremely dehydrated, certainly exhausted in all ways, stomaches, hungry feeling. By the mid-second week (ten days, maybe), the subject has gone into a semi-comatose state, responding to outside stimuli with bared teeth and growls. cannot speak coherently, more of a mumble of consonants under their breath. Fourteen days in, the patient is fully attacking anyone that approaches them, any kind of sound attracts them and they will swing out with rotten nails and dirty teeth.

More specific timeline: 1) first few days, typical bad flu; 2) (~5-6 days in), hungry, can't eat, exhausted, dehydration; 3) (~10 days), semi-comatose state; 4) (~14 days), unconscious state, attack mode entirely.

Symptoms: 1), appears as a bad flu-ish, (high temperature/fever of 101-2, sneezing, headaches, tired feeling, pain in hands/feet, reddened eyes); 2) can't eat, (throwing up, can't keep anything done), feels extremely dehydrated, certainly exhausted in all ways, stomaches, hungry feeling; 3) semi-comatose state, responding to outside stimuli with bared teeth and growls, mumbles incoherent words sounds; 4) seemingly unconscious, will attack anything that approaches them/that subject can hear.

Infecting others: Appears to spread by saliva, as similar to the original occurrence of the "antidote" being injected into the first person. May come from scratches that reach the blood of an unsuspecting person.

Consequences: Some of the older infected do seem to suffer from the not-eating/not-drinking manner, bodies somewhat. No one has died yet that had been infected, from what the still alive people can tell.

- Town Outline

Basically, I would say Arroville is decently small with one main hospital to the western part of town. With Meriel's and Terria's stores, there is also a grocery chain place, and a few fast-food/restaurants scattered through the town. Four different schools, an elementary school, an academy for K-8th grade, a middle school, and then a high school.

It's a pretty off-the-wall quiet area in a liberal portion of west-southern state-ish judging by the fact that it's a rather diverse town/multi-language speaking area.

- Plot Outline

- plotting:

The first event is going to be Noah in trying to find his cousin Cindem, as he had lost them trying to make their way to Terria's store. All four of them eventually trickle to the graveyard to meet up and discuss what they can actually do. This can take a few scenes, starting with Pallo's view.

From there, I think I'll follow Terria in trying to gather all of her supplies from her store and figure out if she's seen Cindem or not. This can end in her discovery of a herd of infected, and Meriel coming to her rescue.
