Okay so I wasn't going to make a new post for the new incarnation of this project, trying to keep things clean and such, but I decided I should bump the thread to this year, haha. Below is the new planning stuff. Everything above will be kept for posterity but all planning is subject to change.

First, A Summary of the Story So Far and my thoughts on it. The summary may be longer than what I've actually written lol.

Spoiler! :

A summary of what has happened until this point

Isabella is sixteen and lives with her seamstress mother near the docks of the unnamed capital of Morovia. One day she is at the market when a veiled woman sees her dress and wants to know who made it. She brings the woman, who turns out to be Princess Carolina, to her mother. The princess says she wants two things--a dress for the New Year's Ball and Isabella to be her servant. The servant position pays handsomely, and Isabella would go to live in the palace and her mother would be sent half of her salary.

Once she arrives at the palace, Isabella quickly bonds with the outgoing prankster Elena, despite warnings that she is trouble. She doesn't understand what this means until one day when the royal family is out and she and Elena are cleaning the princess's quarters. Elena thinks it would be fun to dress up in the princess's gowns and Isabella reluctantly goes along with it. They end up dancing and eventually kiss. This is when the princess returns. Furious, she fires Elena but lets Isabella off with a warning.

Over the next few weeks, two things dominate Isabella's time--searching for Elena and the advances of the Princess. Isabella knows that having same sex relationships is sinful according to the teachings of the priests (Silanos). Her mother is faithful and conservative, but Isabella is starting to have doubts, especially after kissing Elena. She knows through the rumor mill that LGBTQ people tend to congregate near Moon Street, so she heads to that area to see if Elena headed there. She ends up in a bar called "The Resurrection" where she meets the owner, Marco, and befriends a trans woman named Eva. Unfortunately, neither of them have any leads on Elena's whereabouts.

As for the Princess, Isabella had also heard rumors that the princess was involved with women and that's why she has not yet married, but she never believed them. But then she saw her flirting with the beautiful daughter of the Ambassador to Helvida. And then, shortly after Elena leaves, the Princess starts making advances on Isabella. This makes Isabella very uncomfortable, but she's in no position to refuse the Princess's demands.

The Princess does indeed enjoy the company of women, but her heart is set on one thing--the crown. She hates that the rules of succession in Morovia mean that her younger playboy brother will get to rule. Finally, her parents tire of her excuses and decide to marry her off to a prince of Belingard to strengthen their alliance. Where I left off, the Princess was contemplating using Isabella to "take care" of this problem.

Analyzing what I Have

The good: The poems themselves aren't that bad, though I could definitely edit them at some point. I was wondering if I should change this to a more conventional prose novel, but honestly I think the poem story is more my style. I also think the characters have potential--I wasn't expecting the Princess to be as important to the story, but now I think she should have a larger role, though I still see Isabella as the MC. I do like messing around and using different perspectives, so I think I'll keep doing that.

The not-so-good: I feel like there's still a lot of gaps in the story, and I also don't think I unlocked the full potential of using the poem format. With poems you can really get into the imagery and people's emotions, so I want to do more of that. I also feel like the poems should be more poetic in order to justify using this format, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that.

The main kink plot-wise in the Story So Far is the nature of Isabella and Princess Carolina's relationship. I had originally written it as not exactly consensual, but now I'm not so sure that's the direction I want to go in. I don't think it's a healthy relationship, especially given the power imbalance, but I think I might rewrite this with Isabella being more into it? Like maybe she's torn between missing Elena and an attraction to Carolina?

Next, Where I Want to Go from Here
Spoiler! :

My entries for LMS will probably be some combination of new plot and filling in gaps in the old plot. There's a possibility I may end up striking some poems entirely if the plot changes enough. For now, I think I need to focus on advancing the story. I'm also wondering if I want some of this to be in prose, but I'm not sure about that.

So where I left off, the princess was betrothed and considering how to get herself out of it, likely by using Isabella/other accomplices to murder him. But maybe that's not the most interesting way to have this go down. Now I'm thinking that Carolina will agree to the marriage under certain conditions (e.g. not giving up her right to the throne, having him move to Morovia instead of her moving to Belingard) and they will be married for at least some time before Carolina makes her move. I think a good starting point here might be the details of the betrothal, maybe bringing in more of the king/queen's perspective and having Carolina bargain with her parents and/or the Belingardians.

So now Carolina is going to marry a prince who she very much does not like. Despite having to fulfill her "wifely duties", Carolina still continues her relationship with Isabella. And...new idea. What if the prince finds out about his wife and Isabella and threatens one/both of them? And then they either a) poison him in a premeditated plot, or b) end up reacting to a physical threat of violence by killing in self-defense? Either way, Isabella is somehow going to take the fall for this, forcing her to leave Morovia to avoid prosecution. I think this is where Magda comes in as an escort

And...now I have another idea. I've been wanting to bring more fantasy-type stuff in this since there hasn't been much yet. What if Isabella responds to the prince's threat by accidentally killing him with magic? In Morovia, magic is something that only the Silanos can practice, though some commoners may have these powers unknowingly and/or practice illegally. Generally, the powers don't show themselves until a time of great stress/emotion. Actually being able to control them at will requires education that Isabella would not have as a Morovian commoner. In other places, like Helvida, people of all classes are frequently born with powers and allowed to practice, so magic education is a thing. So once she ends up in Helvida, Isabella gets to learn more about her powers and how to use them.

Another thing that may happen is a war between Morovia and Belingard. Morovia puts out a statement that the prince's death was natural, but the Belingardians aren't buying it and so all hell breaks loose. Eventually, someone finds out about Isabella's role in the murder and comes after her while she's in hiding with Magda in Helvida. Helvida's government isn't sure whether to side with its neighbor Belingard or its longtime ally Morovia. This may require Isabella and Magda to leave to another world that I have yet to name/describe.

Well...that's certainly a lot more plot than I had before. I still want there to be romance, but I want there to be Other Things going on as well to keep this a sustainable and interesting project.

Revised Character Descriptions
Spoiler! :
Isabella-The MC. Starts out timid and obedient but finds her voice as she explores the world outside the Palace and eventually Morovia itself. She is 16 at the start of the story. She is skinny and pale-skinned with strawberry-blonde hair.

The weird thing is, I feel like I don't know that much about Isabella even though she's the MC. Maybe as I get back into writing from her voice I'll pick up more of her. I'm getting a vibe that she "falls in love" easily, but is scared of committing to one person. I think she's also developed some wariness of the world influenced by her mother being perhaps overly trusting and generous. I also think she has some wanderlust--like growing up she always wanted to see more of the world than the docks of Morovia, but never thought she would have the chance. Thus, though leaving her mother and joining the Palace is new to her, she is very interested in the opportunity and hopeful that she'll get something out of this new gig. I feel like there's a lot of background and backstory here that hasn't been touched yet but something I may want to explore as I revisit the earlier plot.

Elena-The MC's first love interest. She is about 17-18 at the start of the story. She is tall and olive-skinned with black hair. Her parents were poor farmers in the country, so becoming a servant was a huge blessing for them. She caught the eye of Princess Carolina during discussions of drought in her region a couple years ago. Many of the other palace servants don't like her and warn Isabella that she's "trouble". Her relations with the princess are an open secret among the servants.

Princess Carolina-The main boss of Isabella, Elena and some other (as yet unnamed) servants. She is 21-22 at the start of the story, tall with olive skin and dark brown eyes and hair. The way I see it, the Princess is not someone you'd want to befriend or get involved with, but she is someone you'd want ruling your country. She genuinely cares about the people of Morovia and is the first royal in generations to actually go out among the people and listen to their concerns. She's skilled at working with diverse groups of people and her father has sought her counsel on various difficult matters affecting Morovia. She wants to rule Morovia, and her father agrees that she would make a far better monarch than her brother, but her mother thinks she should be properly married off by now. Her laser focus on Morovia and being queen leads to her not noticing or outright dismissing the feelings of her closest friends and lovers. Ultimately, if it benefits her or Morovia, she won't hesitate to do it, not matter how ruthless. She's had numerous secret affairs with women, but not actual long-term relationships.

Prince Juan III-Younger brother of Princess Carolina and presumed heir to the throne due to Morovia's rules of male succession. However, his hot temper and general disinterest in governing is well known, leading many to speculate that he should not be king. He is average height and kind of scruffy looking with a dark beard. Not sure how much of a role he will play in the plot.

King Juan II and Queen Ariana-Princess Carolina's parents, who won't have POV poems but nonetheless play crucial roles in the plot. They oversee a time of great prosperity but also rising social tensions in Morovia. They've given their children authority over their own servants, so even though they're technically Isabella's bosses, she largely answers to the Princess. The Queen is more traditional-minded, close with the Silanos, and wants to see her daughter married off. The King is more forward-thinking and thinks his daughter would make a better ruler than her brother, but also fears bucking long-held traditions. He also cares what his subjects think of him, while the Queen mainly cares about the opinions of the Silanos and other nobles.

Magda-A noblewoman and ambassador's daughter from Helvida, a key Morovian ally. The land is colder but more socially liberal (and importantly, very accepting of LGBT+ people, which will probably be called something different). She is intellectual and adept at water/ice magic. Tall, thin, with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Starts out as one of the Princess's lovers but develops a relationship with Isabella.

Ricardo-A fisherman's son and neighbor of Isabella's in her pre-Palace days. They were childhood friends but I don't know if he'll come into the story proper or just in flashbacks. (One idea I'm floating--they were at one point so close that he thought they would end up getting married, though I don't think Isabella was ever into this plan and I'm not sure if they were ever in a relationship or not).

Isabella's mother Columba-A seamstress who married a fisherman (Isabella's father, who died when she was young). She's quite talented and could live somewhere better, but has always been generous (perhaps too generous?) which her funds. Her talent catches the Princess's eye when she sees Isabella wearing one of her mother's dresses. Short and stout with green eyes and graying brown hair.

The Head Chef Beatriz-A sort of "mother hen" figure to the servants. Her main role plot-wise is warning Isabella about Elena's "bad influence". (Note: may or may not be kept in future plotting).

Marco-Bartender and co-owner of The Resurrection. Middle-aged portly gay man who lives above the tavern with his partner (name TBD). Kind-hearted, friendly, and welcomes everyone who enters the bar...unless he suspects your motives are less than friendly toward the LGBT community. Then he will sic Fairness and Equality on you. Fairness and Equality are the tavern's guard dogs.

Eva "The Bearded Lady" - A trans woman that Isabella meets at The Resurrection. She's wary at first, but they eventually become friends. Unsure how much of a role she will play in the rewrite, so this could be expanded upon later.

Revised Setting/Worldbuilding Notes
Spoiler! :
I'll probably end up keeping a lot of this the same, but I do want to look at this with fresh eyes.

June 1, 538-A Wedding for a Crown

My parents greet me at lunch
wearing their royal portrait faces.

My mother tries to sell me
on the virtues of marrying the spare prince,
but I will not go to Belingard.

I am a daughter of Morovia,
growing from the sea and sun and grape vines.
Replant me in the gray mountains
and I shall wither away.

Father, I plead,
you need me here.
Don't call me indispensable
only to let me rot
in a foreign fortress.

I sip my tea,
letting them stew in silence.
Then I make my offer.

Father,
leave me the crown.
My brother cares not for these people.
Let him marry some foreign princess.

Mother,
plan me a wedding.
I care not for the details.
Let him move to Morovia if he wants my hand.

My father nods in agreement.
My mother says it sounds so wrong,
so strange, so non-traditional,
as if I ever gave a damn about traditions.

Aaaahhhh I love the last two lines! Not much to say about this part, except that the princess really has a strong voice here, quite likeable, and has an opposite character than her mother. I wonder what's going to happen later on. Keep up the good job! :D

@Lightsong, thanks for replying! I'm glad you liked it. I'm not sure how "likable" I want the princess to be, though obviously a poem in her voice is going to come out in her favor. If you read my planning stuff above, I don't think she's one to be trusted as a friend/lover, though she will make a more than capable ruler.

June 15, 538-A Farewell to Midnight Games

Stay with me Izzy,
she whispers into my ear,
her breath smelling of the wine
served at her engagement party.

Her lips find their way to mine
and for a moment I can pretend
that I believe her when she claims
she needs me.

I know this is a game to her,
one she plays with all the pretty girls,
like the ambassador's daughter,
like Elena,
like many more I cannot name.

My skin is but a playing field,
her every word and touch and kiss
designed to help her win
my heart and my silence.

Soon enough, the game will end
as a prince will take my place in her bed
so she can have her true love,
the Morovian throne.

I will miss her black eyes, her kiss,
and the way she plays with my hair,
but I have always known
that you cannot own a princess.

July 8, 538-A Chance Encounter

Two nights before the wedding,
I go to the only place I can breathe
in this damned country
defined by rules and heat.

Marco brings me my favorite wine,
and I watch the figures in rainbow robes
dance and sing and laugh
as if the world outside these walls
was not black and white and backwards.

Though Carolina will deny it to her grave,
these are her people,
and only her blood saves her
from the wrath of the Silanos.

She has bargained away her happiness,
but would she show the courage
to change the rules around Moon Street?

"Magda, my beautiful northern goddess!
Come and meet my new friend Isabella!"

The servant girl's green eyes grow wide
and her face as pale as Helvida's snow.

Spoiler! :
Ugh, it's not good that I'm already struggling on Week 3, but I am rushing to get this in early because I'll be busy going to my friend's wedding most of the rest of the week. I like the idea of this happening plot-wise, but I'm not sure this is the best way to go about it? This is also the first time I've written in Magda's POV, and I'm wondering if I should use hers or Isabella's.

July 8, 538-A Chance Encounter, Part 2

I ask Eva if she is ever afraid
of the Silanos,
of people like my mother,
of the laws of Morovia.

Sometimes, she admits,
but I'm more afraid of living a lie.
If they get me,
at least I'll die a bearded lady,
not a boy who ran from the truth.

What about you, my dear?
Are you content as the princess's pet,
watching her marry some man
while you remain in the shadows?

Before I can answer,
she turns to greet the newcomer,
a pale face I know too well.
I follow my instincts and bow.

She laughs,
and I notice her eyes for the first time,
sparkling blue under the lanterns.

No need for such formalities here,
I'm Magda, and you are...Isabella, right?
I have to say, that crazy witch
sure picks the finest servants.
Too bad she only changes the rules for herself.

Lines: 25

Spoiler! :
Ugh this is bad but I think I like writing this from Isabella's perspective better. Or maybe I'll keep both? Eh whatever I just wanted to get something in this week

July 10, 538-Getting Ready

Today, I made a work of art
from a body I have come to know too well.

I bathed her in Sundara's finest oils,
then buried her sweetest parts
under layers of Morovia red and Belingard gold,
transforming her into a bride.

As I attempt to wrestle her curls
into an updo ready for wedding tiara,
she shakes her head and snickers.

"I'm sorry Izzy,
but Elena was much better at hair".

Oh Elena,
has it been so long
since our treacherous kiss?

I am inside the princess's vortex now,
but please don't think I've forgotten you.
I never will.

July 9, 538-Requests for Sil's Blessing

The Queen

Oh Sil, please shine your light
upon my daughter, now a bride!

Do not rain on her dress of red
and bring her sunny days instead.

Oh Sil, tell me you understand
we broke tradition to save our land.

Even your priests have all agreed
that she will make the finest queen.

Oh Sil, I don't know what you've heard
from noble men with poisoned words

about my daughter's wicked ways
with servants that lead her astray.

Just make her gentle, make her tame,
so she'll bring glory to our name.

The Princess

Oh Sil, forgive me if my prayers
are not as even, not as rhymed.
I was too busy playing games
to pray as children do at night.

Oh Sil, I know I cannot ask
too much of this blond bland boy
who's dared to leave his home for me
so I can have the throne, my joy.

Oh Sil, I hope that he is kind
enough for me to tolerate,
for he knows as well as I
that marraige for love is not our fate.

Oh Sil I'm sure my mother's asked
for you to tame my wild ways
so that the noblemen won't talk
of her sweet princess gone astray.

But Sil, you made me this way, right?
Do you not sculpt with perfect hands?
Don't make my husband try to fix me
and I will take good care of our land.

July 10, 538-The Wedding

This is how it has to be,
my father escorting me
through the flower-covered streets,
my people cheering,
my heart caged in a red dress.

Is this how it has to be?
Her, walking to her doom,
her face a smiling mask
while I carry her train,
ever the faithful servant.

This is how it has to be.
I was born to marry a prince,
to cement alliances and carry heirs,
not to rule, and certainly not to love.
I have tasted both,
and today I choose to rule.

Is this how it has to be?
Two souls reduced to pawns,
reciting ancient promises,
creating the illusion
of following the rules,
as if no one could change them.
As if she could not change them.

This is how it has to be.
The altar, adorned in red and gold,
the Silano next to Bel's priestess,
the groom sweating in summer heat,
his smile as fake as my own.
Perhaps he too has tasted love
and now leaves her (or him) behind.

Is this how it has to be?
Not all gods are alike, I have learned
from the ambassador's daughter.
In Helvida,the gods will marry
any two souls, whether male or female.
Perhaps Sil could travel north
and learn new rules.

This is how it has to be.
My head, aching from its crown.
A kiss, rough and parched,
so unlike the softness I have known.
A nation, ever watching,
ever trusting that I will keep them safe,
for their happiness weighs more than my own.

Is this how it has to be?
If people can change,
then why must their laws be static?
If Sil loves us all,
then why would he make his own princess
break her heart to serve him?
If she really loved me,
would she not break all the rules?

August 24, 538-The Gap

This got a little 16+, so I'm enspoilering it.
Spoiler! :

Carolina

By day, my life is a whirlwind
of must be here, must do that.
Now that I am the future queen,
the world is watching me
and I cannot breathe.

At night, my bed belongs to him,
the husband who says almost nothing,
a man of hard edges and awkward motions
who hardly cares how I respond.

It is only in between that I see her,
dressing me at the start of the day
or preparing me for bed after dinner.
But we are never alone like we used to be,
and she wears the mask of a servant
who was never anything more.

It surprises me how I can miss someone
even though she is right there.

Isabella

I know I should not miss her,
the girl I am watching transform
into a woman, a wife, a queen,
for I am just her servant.

I know that Morovia
demands the world from her
and her husband squeezes out what is left.
There is nothing left of her for me,
and I have no right to ask.

But sometimes I remember
the way she used to whisper my name,
the way her skin felt against mine
when there were no gaps between us.

I wonder if her husband kisses her like I did.

Lines: 31

Spoiler! :
So this is a little phoned in to meet the deadline, but I've decided I like the dual perspectives thing so I plan to continue like that. I think it moves the story along a little faster.

Well geeze I thought last week got 16+? This one is at least 16+ and maybe 18+ for sexual content. Still, it's probably the best poem of this entire project.

September 15, 538-A Special Assignment

Spoiler! :

A note,
handed to me
out of sight of the other servants.

"Isabella,
Come to the library at dawn.
I have a special assignment for you."

A room
cloaked in darkness and dust
housing ancient tomes
of stories and secrets.

"Izzy, you came!
Would you care to come closer?"

A command
disguised as a question,
and a nickname I have not heard
in three long months.

"Your Highness,
may I ask what this special--"

A kiss
interrupts me
as she pushes me against the wall
and begs me to touch her.

"You see Izzy, my husband
is either too gentle or too forceful
and he'll never get it just right.
But you do, you always do."

Her gown,
undone by my trembling fingers,
at last falls to the floor.

"Oh Izzy, how I've missed you!
But now I don't have to.
My husband would never think
to look for me here."

Her lips
leave their mark on my skin,
and now I grow full from a meal
I did not know I needed.

October 15, 538 - A Princess in Love

My first love tastes
of wine and the sea,
her jagged cliffs and rolling hills
a masterpiece carved by Sil himself.

Her voices are many,
from robed Silanos singing prayers in cathedrals
to laughing fishermen in seaside taverns
to calls from those who toil in our vineyards
demanding change from the nobles
ignoring them in the mansions.

I hear them always,
and I want to lead them
into a new Morovia,
one with a queen that listens,
not a king that cares only for the richest.

At night, I think of my people
as I endure my husband's fumbling,
for making him believe I want him
is the price I pay for my true love.

At dawn, I arise
to find my salvation in the library,
getting lost in green eyes and wine lips
and a voice that crashes into me
like waves upon the shore.

Only seven months ago,
she was just another pretty servant,
but now I look to Sil's light and wonder
if I have two loves now.

October 22, 538-A Reunion on Moon Street

Among the dust and books at dawn,
I can almost forget
that her family owns the palace,
owns the crown,
owns me.

In the daylight,
she won't look at me,
won't say my name,
won't utter more than orders.

At night she plays pretend
for the strange man from Belingard,
and I slip out into Moon Street
watching braver souls hold hands.

How strange it is
that I can do anything I want to her
but hold her hand for the world to see?

"Alone again tonight?"

The ambassador's daughter
pulls me onto the dance floor
as Eva sings of freedom, of pride,
of no more shame.

Am I a traitor
for sinking my fingers
into her silky blonde hair,
for drinking in her perfume,
for wondering what it would be like
to not have to hide and play games?

"This is nice", I whisper,
not knowing what else to say.

"You know Isabella,
if you stayed with me,
I wouldn't hide you like Carolina does."

November 15, 538-Magda Comes to Mother's House

Come with me, little snowbird,
to a place I've been before.
You've seen the palaces, but tell me
have you walked among the poor?

Smell the catches coming in
from fishermen in the bay.
Hear the drunkards from the pubs
Throw insults at your pretty face.

There's no chefs here to cook a feast,
no jewelry or ballgowns.
But here in the huts where I grew up
I must say love abounds.

My mother gives all that she has
to the lowest men as Sill commands.
We don't have much but she can make
The finest dresses out of mere strands.

Look, there's the foolish boy who thought
I'd marry him someday.
Perhaps that would have been enough,
but now I've found a better way.

And now we've reached my mother's door,
So we must play pretend.
I don't know what she might suspect,
but in here, you're just a friend.

Spoiler! :
Well this was unexpected. Now, I've somehow had Magda and Isabella's relationship develop to the point where she's taking her home under the pretense of being a "friend". Yeah there is def some development missing here but I'm rolling with it

October 23, 538-Another Player, Another Game (note: 16+, enspoilered)

Spoiler! :
October 23, 538-Another Player, Another Game

This morning,
the Princess called me beautiful,
as she always does.

With her hand under my skirt,
she complained about her husband,
as she always does.

When she was done,
she left in silence,
as she always does.

Does she know
how close my lips came to betrayal?
Does she care?

Tonight,
I sip my wine at the Resurrection,
watching the doors,
wondering if Magda meant it
when she said she wouldn't hide me.

She enters,
a vision in navy.
This time, I ask her to dance

and when we kiss,
I know she meant every word.

Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.
