Harry Potter author JK Rowling has revealed that one of her characters, Hogwarts school headmaster Albus Dumbledore, is gay.

She made her revelation to a packed house in New York's Carnegie Hall on Friday, as part of her US book tour.

She took audience questions and was asked if Dumbledore found "true love".

"Dumbledore is gay," she said, adding he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.

"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she said, and added Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down" and his love for Grindelwald was his "great tragedy".

"Oh, my god," Rowling, 42, concluded with a laugh, "the fan fiction".

I read that on Yahoo!News.
Suddenly, I feel disappointed, and JK Rowling isn't my favorite author anymore.
I'll never look at our beloved Dumbledore the same way again...

So is she saying, "Yes, he is gay!" or "The fanfiction says he is!" I don't understand...

Either way that's ridiculous/hilarious.

That is soo funny!

I think it's a good thing if Dumbledore is gay. Stand up for gay rights and all that.

I don't think it's good for him to be gay, even for gay rights. It's almost like she added it in as an after thought thinking, "Hey, maybe I'll get more fans this way!" or something.

If you're going to have a gay character you're going to make it so that the readers know...Otherwise why even bother with his sexuality at all?

Personally, I wish she'd made it more obvious in the actual books. That'd have made Dumbledore's fight with (and subsequent killing of) Grindelwald so much more emotional and meaningful.

As it is, I agree with Suzanne - it feels so tacked on.

Oh, and I just have to add: flytodreams, that's a little immature, don't you think?

I must admit- that is true. When the characters began to get a bit more.....mature (I think that's the right way to put it..) they should have questioned his sexuality or something should have been mentioned. It's probably just an afterthought- I bet JK doesn't even know herself.

But why should we even care? I like Dumbledore no matter what.

O.o wow...that's all I can say...wow.
I honestly would never have guessed.
It could be taken as good or bad...depending on where you stand on gay rights...but Dumbledore???...never would have thought.

Hah, the very fact that you "never would have thought" shows that it's tacked on afterwards...

It almost makes me mad, thinking about it. I don't read HP, so it isn't the books that I am mad at. It's the fact that an author would tack something on at the end of her series. It's just... so trivial and pointless.
