The Deathly Hallows: a sneak preview
In a trailer for the forthcoming ITV documentary, A Year in the Life... J K Rowling, the camera lingers long enough on a printed manuscript of the novel, dated 23 October 2006, to make the opening visible to the eagle eyed. It reads:

'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'

The Observer

This is uncomfirmed, and so may not be true. The rest of the article is a load of background information about JKR's agent, Christopher Little.

Only 5 days to go! It's so close!
There's always been a lot of tension between Lois and me, and it's not so much that I want to kill her, it's just, I want her to not be alive anymore.

Dated from October of last year, odds are it may have changed.

But still! Can't wait.

I'm getting it at midnight and staying up until dawn reading it so no one can spoil it for me.

Yeah, I saw that bit on the Harry Potter site (Mugglenet or something?), and they put forward a pretty convincing argument that it wasn't real--note the strange combo of American and British grammar/spelling, for one thing.

"The Dark Lord Ascending". Most of Rowling's other chapter titles are simply events or objects, and I can't think of any that contain verbs; I just noticed how odd it sounded.

It's the actual first chapter title.

I don't remember where I found it, but the chapter names have been released to one of the major fansites. I'm doing my best to find it.

I thought that about the whole thing. It just doesn't sound like Rowling. Not in her style at all.

Funnily enough it's the actual opening.

I know! Perhaps we were just being overly-critical?

Possibly.

Too on the alert for fakes.

BUT it was the real thing, strangely enough.

Well, it's not her style. Her style completely changed this book.
