It seems that forcing standalone movies to become trilogies is the new cliché in Hollywood. Considering that this weekend’s box office heavyweight, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, had more than its share of clichés in dialogue and plotline alone, this added characteristic certainly didn’t help. The first film in this forced trilogy, POTC: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was renowned for its fresh and original nature; the latest installment’s warmed-over plot twists lacked the unique punch that made the original Pirates so memorable. Lines such as “You murdered my father!” were too reminiscent of cheesy Star Wars dialogue; in fact many of the inter-character relations seemed recycled from past classics. Also, one of the major plotlines ended up being utterly pointless, and there were several details that were forgotten or just not explained (i.e.: Jack the monkey didn't turn skeletal in moonlight). Not to mention that the movie lacked clarity at times, what with the poorly done character swapping between the various ships, and the intricate, mainly unclear, motives that guided each character. However, when the credits started rolling, the audience was left feeling satisfied, and the special effects were spectacular. Also, the acting was great—only Orlando Bloom continues to be a talentless fixture—and the old Pirates humor was still here, just in a much less sophisticated manner. Overall, despite its flaws, this movie was vastly enjoyable, and is worth seeing in theaters—once at least.
The good parts of a book may be only something a writer is lucky enough to overhear or it may be the wreck of his whole damn life — and one is as good as the other.
