Welcome to YWS's 14th Birthday Sonnet Contest!

Image

Your Challenge:
It's pretty simple - in celebration of YWS's 14th birthday, write a 14-line sonnet and submit it in the thread below! Your poem can be on any topic you want, as long as you follow the sonnet format.

But I Don't Know How to Write a Sonnet!
That's okay! Writing a sonnet can be complicated, as it's a very specific form with detailed rules, but for the purposes of this contest we'll be simplifying the format a little. Your sonnet must:

1. Have 14 lines
2. Be organized into 3 stanzas of four lines each, with a final 2-line stanza
3. Have a rhyme scheme of:
ABAB // CDCD // EFEF // GG

If you'd like to learn more about the form of a sonnet, check out this article! Normally, sonnets also have a specific number of syllables per line and use some form of meter. You do NOT need to count the number of syllables per line or use iambic pentameter for your sonnet, but if you do, we'll definitely be impressed!

The Judges
@Mea
@Querencia

The Deadline
Midnight November 14th in your timezone. (So you have until the very last seconds of YWS's birthday. :D)

The Prizes
First Place: 1500 points and a review from me!
Second Place: 1000 points
Third Place: 500 points

If you have any questions about the format or other concerns, just ask in the thread! Good luck, and may the rhymes be ever in your favor!
We're all stories in the end.

I think of you as a fairy with a green dress and a flower crown and stuff.

I think you, @Deanie and I are like the Three Book Nerd Musketeers of YWS.

@Traves - I'm going to say no for right now, because the contest only lasts a couple of days and so I'm expecting that what people submit will be a little unpolished.

((This is just here for me to remember ABAB // CDCD // EFEF // GG))

This is my bad sonnet...:

Here
Spoiler! :

My Doll,
My Dear,
You are all
that I have here

Your smile,
It glows
Across a whole mile,
As white as the snow.

You are all I need,
And all I want.
I love you with a greed,
If I may be so blunt.

My darling, you are all I see,
For you are the only one for me.
“Who we are and who we need to be to survive are very different things.”

Here's mine.

Spoiler! :
They asked where you wanted to go and you said
"anywhere but here". You looked up flights
to every country, because you were fed
up with being stuck in a town that felt too tight.
At last you boarded the plane and saw all the places
you'd only known in dreams. Yet when you called
your family, you held back tears, searching for faces
that looked like ones you knew. But you wouldn't dare crawl
back to the suburb you once called hell,
so you kept flying, searching for somewhere you would fit.
Then your phone rang. Your mother wasn't well,
so you bought your last one-way ticket.
And after you've travelled the world on your own,
You feel like a stranger in the place you called home.
"You do ill if you praise, but worse if you censure, what you do not understand." Leonardo Da Vinci

Here's my entry

Spoiler! :
he loved the stars

and getting his hands dirty

he was most likely getting put behind bars

before he turned thirty

she loved the way words moved her

and had a knack for trouble

her saturday nights were a blur

and on sundays she found herself putting memories together like a puzzle

they found each other somehow

a coincidence you couldn’t imagine

they're happier now

peace from passion

he is 35 now & with a clean record

and she just published her second book with him onboard

A birthday sonnet:

Spoiler! :

Is there anything about a birthday,
in its timing or practice, that makes it
a remarkable day in any way?
Should we celebrate around candles lit?

We have no role in our nativity,
nor a special claim of fame to living.
Yet in this trip around the sun I see
a reason for joy, a greater something;

it's the people we meet, filling our lives,
it's the memories of failures and gain,
it's the sum of sun sets and also sun rises,
and it's finding meaning in hope or pain.

Birthdays are worthy of observance, yes!
In some small way they help the world make sense.
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

Here's the final version of that sonnet from the workshop.

Spoiler! :

"And into Hell With This I'd Rather Go"

The silence that I know is soft as snow,
yet swaddles me so warmly in delight.
And into hell with this I’d rather go,
this blanket: seasoned soldier of the night.

Arising at the blazing set of sun
to shield me from the heat of envious eyes.
Like teachers, shoo away ululation,
and buy for me more sky before demise.

The downy tufts that muffle every noise,
imbue me full of gentle swan-like grace.
Replenish what I’ve lost in peace and poise:
A kiss of life upon my wretched face.

Yet nothing quiet can be done or said
to vanquish so the voices in my head.
