(Taken directly from the profile comment here that blew up from the division of votes.)

So, just like the title implies, how do you say coupon? Do you say it like "koo-pon" or "kyoo-pon"? Or are you a weirdo that says "koo-pen"? Or maybe Americans say the word funny and you say something else?

Comment and discuss!

Personally, I say kyoo-pon. :P Like the majority of YWS, I'm from the US, and it seems like each side of the country says coupon differently. For the most part, most Midwesterns like myself seem to be saying kyoo-pon.

The plot thickens: apparently this used to be a hot topic in the internet, so I found this infographic.

Not entirely sure if this is legitimate, but it seems like Team Kyoo-Pon is winning heh heh heh

I switch depending on who I'm talking to/how awake I am. When I'm tired, my latent New Yorker comes out (I have a Queens/Brooklyn accent), but I grew up in the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania and typically speak like it.

It's definitely tied to geography, and here's a relevant link. :P

Honestly all this is doing is reminding me of my two hour, 8 am lecture on coupons in which my professor said the word so many times it stopped sounding like a word, and for the next two months my class would bring it up every single time somebody said the word coupon.

Look, America, you can't just go sticking random Ys in words for fun!

We Malaysians call it koo-pon, and saying it as kyoo-pon can make you come across as being pretentious, like you're trying to hard to sound English. xD

Michigander here, and I've always said "koo-pon". Don't recall anyone I know saying "kyoo-pon"

ETA: just heard a radio commercial say “no Kyoo-Pon needed” so maybe that is the official American pronunciation haha

In defense of America's weird pronunciations, there IS precedent for sticking Y's in the middle of things, like how we say

cube
cute
curious
cumulative

Maybe kyoopon is byootiful even if it's wrong.
