One of my favorite methods is to write mini stories with the main cast going shopping at the mall, playing paintball, at Christmas, swimming, or just vegging out.
Because I like putting my characters in situations where I can take them out of character and make them behave like idiots!
XD
This might be a little bit insane, but when I'm writing, I always have a part of my brain focusing on one of the characters sitting in a room, telling the story to me. There's a steel table and chair and white tiled walls/floor, and a plain white ceiling. I'm on one side of the table, my character's at the other, and sometimes I ask questions, sometimes we argue, etc.
The other part of my brain (or maybe the part that's me as the reporter) sorts it all out and decides what to leave in, what to add, or whatever, to make it the best possible story.
If I run out of ideas or whatever, I just interrogate/interview another character.

Huh... I'll have to try that sometime. Even if it doesn't really help, it'd be fun! =D
If only you could see
How heaven stills when you speak
I know all your days
And I have wrapped you in mystery

I don't care what the miserable excuse is
for showing the death of books, live, on screen.
