well everyones covered mine :) but one thing I always do is to pick names that has a meaning related to the character and also popular in the year the character was born. Also, I like to keep a note pad beside my bed with a pen. Its great for when you have an inspiring dream. :)

Write what you want to write, don't write what people want you to write.

Don't ignore good characters. I'm working on a novella, and the topic and plot are sort of cliche, but I really love the characters, and it's turning out beautifully.

Write parts that you know. Don't spend hours finding out what you want to happen in the spaces of what you don't know. Then leave it for a couple of days, weeks, months or even years if you want!
This is what I do when I write. Hope this helps.

The best tip that almost no one gives.

There are some stories that have perfectly good plots but are ruined when all they say is "This happened." A good story shouldn't have to explain itself to the reader, and it should only confuse him or her when it needs to, not as a way to make the reader it's toy.

Know when it is appropriate to show, and when it is appropriate to tell.

Also, know what equates "showing" and what equates "telling."

This explains what each is a bit more.

I haven't posted on this thread in forever. Currently my favorite writing tip is:
Go big or go home.

Seriously though, why would anyone want to read anything that isn't absolutely crazzzzzy?

This planet has - or rather had - a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much all of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of small green pieces of paper, which was odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.
— Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
