Will become fantasy very very soon. I promise.
Chapter Two
Interrogation
Thank god it's Friday I thought as I drove to school. I decided to follow my schools dress code. Rules were rules. My rebellious attitude that was raging in me yesterday was gone and I was back to me normal slightly mundane self. Wow, I'm interesting.
I parked my car and headed to the Quad where I knew my small group of friends would be. Before I could reach them however I was cut off by Ava and Katie.
“Hi?” I said puzzled. They were so cold to me yesterday, I didn't know how to respond.
“Hey.” Ava said quickly. “Is it true your sister went missing a couple years back?”
Wow straight to the point.
“Uh, ya. Why?”
Ava paused and Katie was staring at me.
“Was she adopted?” asked Ava.
“What?” I exclaimed astounded. “No! Of course not she was my twin!”
Katie raised her eyebrows, “Was your twin?” She emphasized that I used her name in past tense.
I guiltily looked down. It was a year ago that everyone concluded that Erin must have been dead. My hope was that she was alive but..
“Hello?” Ava was waving her hand in front of my face.
“Oh. Sorry. Um ya was my twin.”
“So you don't think she's alive at all.”
“No.” I answered softly.
“What if your wrong?” Blurted Ava.
“I'm not.”
“How do you know?” Ava continued.
“I don't know. It seems reasonable. She's been missing for a while.” I said sighing. God, what was up with the questions?
“Don't you have so plan to find her? Either alive or dead?”
I didn't want to explain my plan to someone who I've just met, nor talk about my possibly dead sister.
“Hey guys, I would really rather not talk about this. Just leave me be. Okay?”
After some hesitation Ava said, “Ya. Whatever, I'm only trying to help.”
Katie nodded. But seemed a little more earnest in her sort-of-apology.
“Hey this weekend do you want to hang out?” Katie suddenly asked.
No. You ask to many questions. You seem like a cop, and I”m the bad guy.
“Uh, ya maybe. I don't know what plans I have.” I answered vaguely.
Ava laughed. She had a beautiful laugh. It lit up her whole face. “Ya right! What plans?” Katie frowned and stepped on Ava's foot. Suddenly Ava seemed not so pretty.
“Bye.” I said crisply and marched stiff backed to my misfit of friends.
The more I thought of it the more Ava seemed right. Friday night, the main party night in America I almost annually spent reading. Was that normal for a Senior? Not having any other family my age I really wouldn't know.
Lunch break was almost over and my table has barely said eight words to each other. I guess these people don't really count as friends. More as people who I sit with and don't talk to.
I glanced around searching for Ava and Katie. They were with a bunch of people talking and laughing. Ava saw me looking and made a point of looking around herself then at me. Indicating that I could come over. But in situations like these my pride wells up and I refuse to be 'let into the group'. I turned my attention to the people sitting at my table. There was the fat weird kid, several Emo's and Goth's, a band geek, and the new Polish student, who didn't speak a word of English.
The bell rang, indicating the end of Lunch Hour. Oh great I thought, time for French.
When I got to my seat Ava and Katie were already sitting at theirs.
“Bonjour.” They murmured.
“Bonjour,” I replied.
“So we missed you at the lunch table.” Ava said.
“Ya. You should of sat with us instead of those geeks.” Katie added.
'One of those geeks' was sitting right next to me and slumped over in his chair when he heard himself being labeled.
Feeling slightly protective I frowned, “Do you have to be so mean?”
Surprised Katie answered, “Mean? How was I being mean?”
My forehead furrowed, didn't she know how she was rude?
“Labeling people?” I leaned in towards her and lowered my voice, “Especially when their sitting right next to you. Isn't that considered rude in California?”
Ava smiled sheepishly, “We were pretty untouchable in Calli.”
“Yup.” Katie agreed.
Over the years I had perfected my dead pan and I put that up on my face. But internally I was shocked. Were they really able to get away with anything they wanted? Were there any social laws there?
“Aw, Penelope don't think bad of us! It's habit!” Ava said with a warm smile.
“Oh great, being means a habit. That's always a sign of a good friend who won't betray you.” I said sarcastically.
That rubbed Ava the wrong way she practically growled in a low furious whisper, “I would never betray my friends. Unlike some people when I say I have your back and that I love you I mean it!”
“Ava..” Katie cautioned.
Ava whipped back around in her seat and squared her shoulders. I looked at Katie trying my best to ask questions with my eyes. She however raised her chin and slowly turned around to face the front of the class.
Once again I spent the entire French lesson staring at the two girls. And once again after French I continued with my day as I normally would. When I was at home however my Samsung Propel jingled. Something that rarely ever happened. I looked at the new text message. It was from a number that I've never seem before. I slide the phone open.
Penelope: Its Ava. Just want you to have my number. This is Katie's (310) 808-8282
