Poems From a Laboratory

Poem No. 1
It's nice to imagine
the bud and the flower
that will spring from the seed.
Potential in your palm.

Poem No. 2
If ye do these things, ye shall receive strength
that ye may walk without fainting.
Ye shall receive marrow to your bones.
Ye shall wax stronger
until ye blossom into sunsets.

Poem No. 3
Old.
Very old.
Even older than the dirt you grew in.
Remember when you were just a sapling? But then, you
Grew and grew and grew. You grew old and lazy and very, very fat.
Remember how you thought you would grow so strong?
Oh how wrong you were. Like the quote, you ended
With a whimper, not a bang.

Little candle in the night,
little candle in the rain,
little candle, bring us light,
little candle, light the way.
Little candle, oh so bright,
little candle, little flame,
Little candle, what a sight!
little candle, never change.

Little candles grow
to become bonfires and still
continue to grow.

Bearing your weight, the wind pushes you as you
Loop, setting the forest below you
Ablaze. You are flying flame,
Zooming up to the
Exosphere.

Total destruction marks the
Oceans where you have visited. I can
Read, in the tides you you have
Rent and torn apart, your
Everlasting hatred for this life.
Nothing is so unnatural
Than the guns sewn into your back.

Poem No. 16
Born with wings,
but seeking no higher
than the tallest blade of grass,
a known potential to match the size,
an undiscovered one to brush the skies

The sky comes within grasp
as the clouds brush alongside me.
The ground below me holds no secrets,
and it is all mine to command.
Sixty miles under my wings,
sixty miles to go.

Poem No. 18
I carry the sun on my wings
like Re of old,
and I can travel around the world
in a single day like Apollo.
...Only, I am bound to nest
and to feed, and to rest...
I'll try again tomorrow.


Poem No. 19
Footsteps-- barely detectable--
sound through the Underneath,
and a faint breeze
sends thousands of tiny feet
scurrying for the corners.
Only whispers are heard
and thousands of tiny ears
prick up to the sound.
A beam of light flickers out
and thousands of red eyes glow
in the musty darkness,
until one by one they are extinguished,
only to be replaced by thousands more.

Poem No. 20
Big teeth
mousy hair,
beady eyes,
webbed toes.
These are just a few of the things
that are wrong with me.
I lash out when people call me names,
but I don't mean to.
I'm really just a coward,
timid as a mouse,
even though they all call me Rat.
I guess I'd better go join my "friends"
in the sewers.

Cross me, I punch you.
You punch me, I continue.
Love me? What to do...?

Leafy tendrils reach around to caress my face,
and I fall asleep...
When I awake, I am a mess and a monster.
My very skin has warped and tangled.

Have you ever been so lost
that you are hardly able
to peer out of your own overshadowing shrubbery?
My eyes blink, jewels in the center of an intricate maze,
glimmering like an incentive for someone to pull me out.

But no one ever does,
so I run to the hedge,
to grow further tangled
in peace.

Poems Found in a Green Forest

Poem No. 10
One might start to believe
that one is worthless
when one falls prey
to every obstacle in the road.
One might want
to curl up,
blend in with the shrubbery,
and never move again.

You must endure
until you fracture
into something beautiful
with wings.

Poem No. 12
A lump like charcoal
has become as ash:
light, gray, floating, delicate.
Weep no more, for the shattered glass
has returned to us, stained, lovely,
and best of all,
free.

Something as tiny
as you has no business in
dealing out poison.

Bide your time.
Nothing good
will come from releasing your anger now.
Store it up.
Take names.
Vendettas are painstaking,
but revenge is oh so sweet.
When you burst forth,
the world will run
from your fury.

Anyone who sees your stabbing, stinging knives
will regret that they ever thought you might be sweet.
But vengeance is like honey on your tongue,
and you are glad that you have knives for hands,
even if it makes you incapable of love.

Pink and pretty, she
Is a fairy child.
Pounding on her foes, she
Is not a weakling baby.

Pixy-Faerie from the moon,
Her wings store moonlight.

No feet to rest:
Just ears to hear

Light my way.

The taste of your blood
like pennies
drained to the music of bat wings.
The stone floor,
so much like marble.
Two puncture marks
from which I siphoned
copper droplets.
Leaving you to ponder
the viscosity of the water
at the bottom of the gorge.

when they provide some shade
from the hot summer's sun.

when all your friends
want to hurt you too.

so you don't have to.

Towers, the 'shroom
infect your mind
attack the tree
infest your mind.
Abandon hope,
you lose your mind,
no entry to
your hijacked mind.

Vile rattle poison goat's eyes
Slimy scales and purple skin
I'll eat you in one bite, because
when I look in a mirror,
I'm a snake.

No. 24
Intimidation is my middle name,
Inspi’ring fear in others is in my game.
Where’re I glide, I strike at gemstone mirrors,
then leave, a mouth of glass instilling fears.
I am a cobra in my very name,
and in the end, you will not be O.K.

The earth chips into fault lines,
and I wonder if it is secretly pyramidal in shape
since its blocks are so similar to the Egyptians'.
But if the Earth was this dry, it would crack in half.

It's hard
to love
when you are a living example
of why nails, cacti, and broken glass
are shunned in close circles.
It's hard
to love
when the world has toughened your hide,
and rather than embrace the world on a whim,
you attack it with claws of fury.
It's hard
to love
when the desert heat
has shriveled your very heart.

Closer, closer, closer now.
Don't mind the edges or the horns,
don't mind the pricking, poking thorns.
Closer, closer, closer now.
Don't mind the sound that pierces through.
Don't mind the poison: I love you.

Powerful footsteps shake the Earth.
They are proclaiming in their tremors,
"Hail your queen, governess of moon and moor!"
She lets out a mighty roar as the ground beneath her cracks,
her voice a drill for poisoned oil that seeps beneath her feet.

Ears alert, he prepares to strike
__at air.
Claws outspread, he attacks
__nothing.
Angered easily, his poison
__oozes
____into an imaginary opponent.
The prince, I must say, is clearly
__insane.

Armored, he lashes out,
bringing foes down in a single blow.
And what the king doesn't defeat at once,
his poison shall surely destroy.

Poem No. 25
Child of lightning and thunder,
yet you run through the walls,
gnawing on electrical wires.
The icon of millions,
quick as greased lightning,
the ability to summon plasma
and the power of the skies,
and yet, humble
as a mouse.

You can barely contain your voltage.
Your eyes droop from lack of sleep because
you glow in the dark, your very skin
keeping you awake at night.
You are a danger to yourself.
You regret having ever found that stone
that made you such a monster.
So hide in the walls.
Never to return.
Just like the

Newspapers are forecasting the end of the world
again. Gloom and doom and gloom.
My eyelids flutter closed at the mention
of yet another bomb built, another war waged,
another hurricane haunting the coasts.
Too much. Sticky sap drips from my lips.
More shootings. More sorrow. More hunger.
I hate being built from the dirt of the world:
I can never escape the soil in my bones.

i have a headache

Poem No. 55
Eyes crusted over with stagnant lake water
flutter open like the butterflies I notice for the first time
on the horrizon. Have they always been there?
I wipe off the layers of grime that has collected
on my skin from rising through the levels of hell,
of ignorance and oblivion.
The gleam in my eye matches the gleam
on the cut-and-polished jem
that is my mind, unveiled.

Light refracted and divided
A million images kallideoscoped
into a shattered stained glass
of tiled images.
A radar blip on the corner of vision
the moon in sight, in mind.
Pull toward the light,
millions of moons in the sky
and infinite stars.
Infinite stars.
Infinite stars.

Moth flies
Over moon.
Rivers of
Poison floating.
Haunting constellation
Orion in
Nighttime dances.

it awaits the day

A bright sapphire, this
gem that sparkles in the cold--
it does not belong.
