KaiaJersaga Okay, so I have to join this discussion. I call it "writer's love." The more I love a character, the more suffering I make them go through. And when I can't realistically make anything worse happen to a character, the book is finished. I'm a downright cruel writer, and I'm not sorry about it.

Well, I think most writers have just a little bit of a cruel streak in them. Certainly true for me and two other writers I know.

alpacaboss The writers love is like tough love. They make their character go through all the bad stuff, but make them triumph at the end (at least most of the time HAHAHAHA). But I think it's more satisfying seeing a character grow from their traumas and experiences than reading about/crafting a Mary Sue

KaiaJersaga Yeah. That makes sense. I'm like that too. I'll usually give the characters I care about a happy end. But sometimes...

I think the struggle we have our characters go through a lot of the time mirrors our own sufferings. It helps at least me to be able to look at my books I've written and say to myself "At least there's someone else feeling the same way as me." And then if you do let a character grow and get over the hardships, that's also really inspiring. Especially if it's something you personally struggle with. Theres a reason a lot of my characters are socially awkward and struggle with low self esteem, lol.

alpacaboss With that I wholly agree. Our characters usually become a reflection of ourselves no matter how much we try to make them the opposite of our personalities hahaha

To anyone who sees this and has read at least one or two of my works, I have a small question (and favor).

Which genre do you think suits me the best? Like in terms of my writing style and depth? I'm planning to work on a large-scale project (novel) and I'm not sure with what genre to start.

loveissourgrapes I feel like narrative and realistic would suit your writing best. That is what you are most best at. It would be nice if you experiment too as a young writer c: Good luck with your novel. Have a good day/night.
