As we're getting close to the new year, I find that looking back and looking forward is fun to do and it's nice to see where you were in YWS years past. So, if you haven't yet, I highly recommend doing some YWS retrospectives so you can look back on this next year and the years after ^^

Being at my childhood home for the holidays has led to a weird discovery about my own past. Found an old Harry Potter journal I got when I was in 2nd/3rd grade and, upon inspection, I realized I didn't fill out a lot of journal entries. However, of the few, one of them caught my eye.

It distinctly said that I wanted to kill myself.

I don't remember this. I don't remember much from my childhood, but I do remember something that stemmed from this. My mom read my journal one day in third grade I think, and asked if I wrote this. I said "no" because the k on kill had a loop in it. I distinctly remember that I forever changed how I wrote my k's because I didn't want to get caught writing that journal entry.

How can a child have thoughts of suicide? What was going on in young me's mind that I didn't want to be alive anymore at the age of seven or eight? And why was I never in therapy? I remember going to therapy /once/ when I was ten, where I was diagnosed with depression. It's a weird feeling to have to realize that I have spent most of my life with some kind of horrible chemical imbalance in my brain. When I heal. If I heal, who will I become? I think a part of me is terrified that I will have to pick myself up piece by piece when I am healing and carefully craft an entirely new person.

I relate to this a lot. I had suicidal thoughts for years as a kid, as young as six or seven, and the concept of being healthy is terrifying because it feels like this imbalance is an integral part of who you are. Just know that you're not alone in that feeling and not alone in the process, either. <33
