The best and worst part of being a writer is having to tear down everything your eighth grade self made and give it a fresh new coat of paint. New map, new culture, new names, new canon. Eighth grade Grand didn't know what she was doing but I, the slightly wiser Sophomore-In-College Grand, now actually know how to write stories and will be undoing what was already done.

My professor 2 or 3 weeks ago: Write a five page memoir and a two page reflection by October 20th!
Me: Great! I won't do that until October 19th!
My professor last week: The memoir is due the 25th now, and the only memoirs I'll show you are the dark and upsetting ones, none of the happy ones!
Me: Great; I'll do that the 24th.
My professor: Please have a rough draft ready by the 20th!
Me: I'll do it the 19th!
My professor: Class tomorrow is canceled : )
Me:
Me: I'll do half of it on the 19th.

How does anyone expect me to get volunteer hours when the places I volunteer for keep sending me home an hour early because all the work gets done quick

Teddybear It seems you are left with little choice but to diddle daddle, lolligag, and fiddle. Or perhaps invent new and exciting tasks, one is never done cleaning, for example.

Teddybear Volunteering to do random cleaning tasks might be able to keep you there longer too. I used to do that at the job that would send me home early from my three-hour shifts (have since found a different job) and it worked pretty good there. Might work for you? Idk how much cleaning animal shelters(?) allow the volunteers to do tho.

Teddybear Look for something that probably doesn't get done daily and do it extra thoroughly. Most of the time that's just moving stuff and cleaning behind it, which I use to look busy at my job so management doesn't complain I'm not doing anything while manning an empty store for five straight hours between customers. Impermanent shelves, the space under desks and tables, the walls (especially in areas where stuff can get on the walls, be it dirt around entryways, the splash zone around food bowls, sinks, etc).

If you're willing to get kinda gross, inside and around trash cans could usually use a thorough clean. More frustrating work is if there are those wire shelves, those get pretty icky so moving stuff off of those and going in with all purpose cleaner and potentially a degreaser with a good scrubbie can take forever depending on how thorough you are about it (they'll never be truly clean if they've existed more than a year in most cases).

Once you start noticing it's hard to stop just seeing gunk everywhere all the time to tread carefully, but this could work, or they could just shoo you away anyway.

Also ask if there's a monthly/weekly cleaning list somewhere you can help with. I've never worked anywhere without one, but I've also never worked anywhere without a kitchen so it could be a kitchen thing idk.
