Hmm I was glad to do at least a couple of reviews and some comments this month . . . but uni work is really piling on and there's just a lot of stuff I have to do to make sure I can go into the career path that I want. Just so I don't ruminate about it too much, I'm just gonna note here that I'll be kind of random in terms of when I review stuff (despite my lofty goals from earlier this year) but I'll do my best c:

Gosh, I wish I wouldn't complain about my flatmates so much, but like,,,

Spoiler! :

this girl has been having loud angry phone calls every night between 1-2 am and also at other times for months now. I typically need 7 hours of sleep to function and because of her and the other flatmate I was getting between 4-6 for a whole semester. It doesn't sound as bad as some other flatmate stories I've heard but for me, it's been a huge driver of my suppressed hatred for humanity lol

My only reason for being considerate to this flat and doing the chores is so that the one nice flatmate I actually like won't be left alone shouldering all the burden. I guess that's a metaphor for life. Both of us basically do everything around here haha

Liminality Anyway at least I'm using my insomnia time to hang out here rather than to continue tossing and turning and raging and not sleeping xD

Rook Former RA mode activated ... Have you talked to her about it/asked her to have phonecalls at other times or to step outside to have them? Many times when people are bothering you they don't know that they are and they're usually pretty willing to change their behavior, but you have to be upfront about what you want and you might have to remind them a few times too. Most people want to be liked by the people they live with.

@Rook oh yeah. I just told her last Saturday or so which was the second time in general I've brought it up. She toned it down for a couple of days and then forgot. I'd probably talk to her again if it repeats itself this week! (Wouldn't be as big of an issue for me to remind her if she weren't so intimidating and weren't involved in a feud with two other flatmates all of last semester haha. Things were so tense back then, I didn't want to add fuel to the fire by bringing up another issue when people were already unwilling to compromise on other stuff...)

Rook Yeah people need to be reminded of things sometimes. Having a slightly more formal feeling to the conversation could help her remember too. Like a "Can I talk to you for a minute?" and then say something like "I mentioned to you twice before that I've been having a hard time sleeping because of your late night phone calls. Since the last time I mentioned it last week, I've lost sleep due to those phone calls three times. Sleep is really important to me and I would really appreciate it if you could avoid talking on the phone that late or move the conversation outside if you do have to have it." You could also ask if there are things she wants to talk about that you might not have known was impacting her.
As an RA we were always told to use emotion-neutral language like "I noticed that..." and to cite specific numbers of times to avoid hyperbole. So avoid saying "You're always talking on the phone at night" because it's easy for them to say "no I'm not" because it's not really true. But saying "you kept me awake three times this week" shows that you have really been inpacted enough to keep track and it's objective data that can't be argued with. Also focused on I or we statements rather than you statements. so instead of you kept me awake, say I couldn't sleep.
being specific with expectations is helpful too, like, if you're talking on the phone between the hours of 10pm to 6am could you move the conversation outside?

Liminality I appreciate that you're sharing your knowledge on this and I know you're trying to help. Thing is, I am aware of all those tips you mentioned and I've used most, if not all, of them in communicating with my flatmates on other issues in the past. They're good tips, and they do work, but it takes a lot more energy on my part than theirs because I feel intimidated by them, and I don't think it's fair for me to constantly put the burden of communication and problem-solving on myself. The situation with my flatmates was a really long, arduous process that involved multiple mediated meetings between them, a lot of passive-aggressive texting, resulting in one of them moving out. Even though none of it was directed at me specifically, it was enough to make me be wary of dealing with those flatmates because I've always struggled to stand up to 'strong personalities'. I know what things I need to say, it just sucks having to say them over and over, which is why I occasionally vent about it on my wall. I'm not really in the market for additional problem-solving strategies at the moment. ^^'

Haven't really gotten to the point of posting full poems in the Literary Center for a while now, mainly because I only want to post when I'm able to review + digest the feedback from the reviews I receive. I have been writing quite a number of poetry drafts, though, so I wanted to do a quick line share c:

Used rags caked in cake crumbs piled on top of each other, beige and yellow layers, streaked russet. They sit on the windowsill, before the cracked-open window. Next to them shiny crimson, a contraption, the expensive-looking coffee plunger. Cramped together, two spray bottles.
