    April 7th: Poetry Crew Pick

Today's #pcrewpick comes from @Ventomology. I've really enjoyed the different types of poetry (check out THREE for a good example of a concrete poem!), but what is sticking in my mind the most is her entry from today, Six.

It's no secret that I love concrete imagery, and this is prefect (in more than just a punny way I didn't actually intend), I mean:

    spiderwebbing chasms in asphalt
that bloom from every salt-and-tire abbrasion,

Great, right? An image most of us know, and even if we don't have the exact same image in mind, it's very specific and invokes a very set kind of image and association.

For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

    Happy 5th Day of NaPo

    this is a poetry pep-talk

Hey! We're a handful of jam jars into NaPo ~ how are things going? :)

If you need a prompt -> try combining the first noun that comes to mind that starts with the first letter of your name / username, and the current weather outside. ie. apple pie + tornado warnings for me? (by the way I am hoping everyone is staying safe right now!) More Prompts Here.

Be sure to check out all the wonderful challenges PCrew has set-up this year -> here ie. did you know you can earn a special badge by commenting on 5 different threads, and a different badge for going to 5 poetry jams / write-ins during napo? Track your progress in the Badge thread so you don't have to go searching for stray jam jars and pumpkin seeds at the end of the month.

If you need some encouragement -> read this: You are a Poet! And I'm rooting for you and know you can do this, don't be afraid to reach for those stretch goals and put your poetry out there! I've read at least the first poem in every person's thread and can honestly say I've enjoyed the reads and we have a pretty talented group of poets this year! Keep it up! 25 jam jars left!

Also don't miss out on reading the other poetry threads out there and sprinkling a little cheer by leaving likes or comments, half the fun of NaPo is having a chance to read the other tremendous threads in our community so don't miss out! There's already a fabulous amount of poetry there so far.

    April 5th: Poetry Crew Pick

Today marks the 5th day of NaPo! My #PCrewPick is this beautiful poem by @Apricity! Apricity's entire thread so far has been stunning! I mean, what else would you expect from a Richard Siken quote title? That really brings it home!

All of her poetry this April is gorgeous, but I felt especially drawn to this one! It captures the complexities of love so well, and it just HITS, yknow? It's raw and haunting, and the imagery shows that.
i looked for love on the sharpest blades and brightest candles

hope is a foolish illusion for those wounded by reality

    even so, for you
    i would run a fool's errand
and gladly believe this time the story ends
    differently.

I'd pick a favourite line, but I just can't! Every word in this poem feels so carefully chosen, and I can't do it justice by picking only one.

I can't wait to see what other poetry comes this month! If you'd love to see more of Apricity's poetry, feel free to check out her thread tell me how all this, and love too, will ruin us! There are some real gems in there.

  • !!!!! IT'S #ThePeoplesPick TIME !!!!!

Here are some of the poems that blew my little brain away!

    1. The Ceremony from This is How a Zombie Rises by @Stringbean
If, like me, you're a huge fan of imagery revolving around dark cottagecore, so bones and skulls, mycelium and thistle, then this is for you! The concept of creating a zombie from scratch, as well as the execution of the poem itself, with powerful imagery and anaphora, makes for an excellent read!

    2. I could have written you the world from The past is not clay, but the future is not stone by @niteowl
If you're looking for something short that packs a PUNCH, then this poem will turn out to be heartwrenchingly perfect for you. These two lines especially have me weeping.
I could write you the world
If only I could see where I was going.

    3. in the april sun from midday moon by @TheSilverFox
This one is for #TeamChickens and #TeamPenguins - or any bird enthusiasts in general! The poem itself is a breathtaking narration of spring and the april ~vibes~ in the form of rambling verses that pose interesting insights here and there, with sprinkles of bird imagery and sounds! If you are looking to welcome April with April themed poetry (and of course, if you're missing chicken poetry, as one often does), then this poem will work perfectly for you!

Stringbean aslasdkfj thank you so much!! <3333

@niteowl and @TheSilverFox have so much good poetry in their threads!

the scar in arizona by SilverNight

It's day 3 of National Poetry Writing Month and the poets are continuing to impress over in the NaPo forums! Today's #PcrewPick comes from a thread that I am super excited to read this month "parked car in the badlands" that has some beautiful graphics and a terrific sense of place and scene already. The poem I'd like to highlight from it for you today is the scar in arizona by @SilverNight. The poem uses the metaphor of elements from trip to the grand canyon to illustrate tension in a relationship.

    Image

These are my favorite lines from the poem:
i tell you my heart is a postcard to the grand canyon
and you don’t get the reference. it’s okay, you’ve never been there
and it’s hard to imagine a fracture that size if you haven’t seen one.

    </3 Oof!

Be sure to take a look at the rest of SilverNight's beautiful poetry at their thread here and watch for more PCrew Pick's in our Hall of Fame. Also did you know you can get in the fun of giving shoutouts by using the hashtag "#/ThePeoplesPick" to highlight your fave poems from the threads!

monsters and people are one and the same
    by @FireEyes

4 days into NaPo and we already have some amazing poems! It truly was hard to choose!

Todays #PCrewPick is from FireEyes thread lipstick stains on wet walls Which has many amazing poems already, and I am exited to see more!

However the poem I want to highlight today is monsters and people are one and the same
This poem uses a lot of imagery and metaphorical language to underline the hurt of someone who has been broken, or feels lost. And loving through all the scars. Truly beautiful!

There is a lot of raw, powerful emotions in this poem. It's one of those poems that stops you and makes you think and feel things very deeply.

    I especially love this stanza
they say it must be killed
but i say it must be loved.

    something so painfully human.
    oh, to love a beast.

because what more is a monster than a broken person?

    What a powerful line~

Read the rest of @FireEyes wonderful Poetry here in their thread! Lot's of wonderful poetry to come!
If you see a poet you would like to highlight, you can use the #/ThePeoplesPick hashtag!
