We cling to music, to poems, to quotes, to writing, to art because we desperately do not want to be alone. We want to know we aren't going crazy and someone else out there knows exactly how you're feeling. --comelywords

  • I was rereading my '21 and '22 NaPo threads because, well, 'tis the season - and it's really neat to see the way my style has evolved and improved these past couple years. Way back when I joined the site in 2017, I didn't use much imagery at all and stuck almost entirely to literal, concrete language. Then when I came back in 2020/2021, I over corrected in the opposite direction: so much imagery, so many flowery frivolous words, so many adjectives and adverbs everywhere you looked. And then in my 2022 NaPo, it seems like I was starting to find the balance between too many words and not enough words. Something I'm definitely still playing around with and getting better at as I go!

Anyway. My point being - it's really satisfying to be able to look back at what I've written and see that all this work is paying off. I am, without a doubt, a better poet than when I started! I think part of that is just being older and more mature, but the importance of practice and stretching your writing muscles definitely can't be understated either. It's a good reminder that you're probably not gonna write fabulous, perfect poetry right off the bat (I mean, nothing's really ever going to be perfect anyway), and that is completely okay. It's growing that's the important part.

  • Did you know @lliyah made a contest for all things goose, chicken, and penguin related??? And the winner of each category (poetry, visual art, song, crochet, you name it) gets 500 points??? This sounds like the perfect opportunity to warm up your poetry skills right before NaPo to me. Go check it out here!

  • Don't mind me doing a little self-promotion <.<

I made a three part art dump over in my art thread that features pencil, acrylic, pastels, and even a bit of clay sculpture~ I don't often say this, but I'm pretty proud of this art, so it would mean a lot if you gave my thread a little snoop!

I mention this over in the thread, as well, but a lot of this most recent round of art has some deeper intentions/personal meanings behind them, so if you're interested in hearing any of that stuff let me know and I'd be glad to share. ^^

    Stringbean these are amazing!!

And! Our NaPo Info Thread is up!

I am so excited for you all to see what the Poetry Crew has in store for you this April. And really really excited to read everyone's poetry too. (Did I mention I'm excited for NaPo yet?)

If you're not sure what NaPo is and this just seems like a lot of alphabet soup to you so far, we'll have a FAQ thread out soon, but for now I'd encourage you to read the Information Thread. Basically NaPo is a month of poetry fun starting April 1.

    To participate in NaPo:

    1) create a NaPo thread in the NaPo Forum for posting your poetry in April.
    2) watch for the upcoming Badge / Contest Thread to read about our specific challenges you can participate in.
    3) jump into poetry jams, contests, and activities all April long! :)

~ watch for more NaPo prep and brainstorming opportunities this March too (like the upcoming Poetry Reader's Session!!) ~ #countdowntonapo #bringbacknapo #napo2023

Liminality wrote:Heads up, you could be discussing a Taylor Swift song at a poetry discussion!!

Hello hello! With NaPo coming up, we're having a special song lyric discussion for our Poetry Readers pad this March! The date/time will be (adjusts to your timezone). You can bring song lyrics from any musical artist you like to discuss. Some examples of the things we might talk about would be favourite lines, how the language of the song makes you feel, etc.

As usual all YWS rules and the content rating system will apply to the pad. Said pad will be posted in the Poetry Readers club and on the People's Tab.

We hope to see you there!
