Nate's Profile: Creator and Owner of a Paper Airplane

  • New feature. Authors will no longer see "Mark this as a review?". Instead, they will see "Sticky this comment?". That will pin the comment to the top. They can also sticky any other comments on their work.

  • Four more chicken lit works to go! Or else the chicken category gets it!

  • Okay everyone, I'm issuing an ultimatum. If there's not more than 20 works in the Chicken Lit section by this time next week, I am striking it out!

    Lucrezia Here's one.

  • I have never heard anyone say "I can't wait until it's February!" That is because February is the worst month. It's still cold, but snow is less likely. The sun still sets early, and as the shortest month, it's the least cost effective month. The Romans saw it as the most unlucky month.

But, I'm looking forward to it anyways! Social Month sounds awesome, and I have most backend updates out of the way, meaning I can start moving onto frontend updates. I'm also looking forward to just being able to relax more this month. Spent way too much time driving in January.

Nate That all being said, I can't wait until daylight savings time starts on March 12! My favorite time of day to run is 7pm, but running in the dark is no fun.

  • If you don't sign up for a review team, you're basically saying you're okay with canine amphibian metamorphosis.

On an aside, I tried getting ChatGPT to come up with a spell name for that, and here's how that interaction went...

    Image

Nate Finally got it to do so by asking it to explain the spell in the speaking style of a wizard!

    Canis Ranae Transfiguro

    Spoiler! :
Ah, my dear apprentice, are you in need of turning your canine companion into a croaking amphibian? Very well, pay heed to my words and take heed to the incantation I impart to thee.

The spell for transforming a dog into a frog is called "Canis Ranae Transfiguro"

To cast the spell, you must first acquire a frog from its natural habitat, and collect a strand of hair from the dog you wish to transform. Next, you must mix the hair with a potion made from the crushed bones of a newt and the ink of a squid, while reciting the incantation.

Once the potion is ready, you must administer it to the dog and recite the incantation again while holding the frog. With a great surge of power and magic, the dog shall transform into a frog before your very eyes.

Remember, such magic should be used with caution, as the consequences of such actions can be dire.

    "Canis Ranae Transfiguro"

Please note that, this is purely fictional and there is no way to cast spell or change a animal into different species.

  • Most users ever online was 881 on Sat Oct 03, 2020 3:31 pm

This was absurd, so I've reset it. Going forward, only registered users will be counted toward the record! Guests and bots will not be counted.

This means that for the time being, a new record has the potential to be set every single day.

  • Woke up this morning worried about missing all my high school classes and today was the final exam.

No matter how old you get, those dreams never go away.

Hkumar Jeez, yes all the time. This proves how much we were traumatized by finals in school.

  • Came across an article today of 15 top writing sites. It was written in 2019, and they included Young Writers Society, but said it didn't seem very active. Meanwhile, their number one site, which is similar to YWS, has a homepage that hasn't updated in six years! Meaning that in 2019, the homepage had been static for at least two years at that point. It's not even supposed to be a static homepage.

I think there's really two reasons why the person described YWS as not very active. The first is that the homepage is kinda blah. The second is that the site is not mobile friendly. I use it, and I know others use it, on mobile all the time, but it involves a lot of zooming. Taken together, that could leave someone with the impression that YWS is not active.

The former issue can be partially resolved by enabling cover art for literary works. That is coming before the end of the month. Revamping the Publishing Center to do it. The second issue is tougher, but I think I'm going to try a quick and dirty method of going about doing it. YWS is already halfway to being mobile friendly, I just need to hide the sidebar behind a collapsible button when viewing the site on mobile. Doing that and making the header and footer mobile friendly will go a long way. Since phones are getting so huge these days, that may even be enough.

Stringbean Ooo, sounds like some cool changes!

Quillfeather I use almost exclusively mobile and I don't find the site much harder to navigate then other sites on mobile. The hardest thing is accidentally hitting the banner or other things like then when I am trying to navigate tabs. I would also say Writer Feed Pads are a nightmare on mobile - the main problem being that when you type In pad while other people are tying it makes you text jump around and add double letters and make everything you try to say go crazy.(would also like to mention writing reviews cab get rather crazy but just because the text box is so small on mobile)
    Not sure if that helps.

BluesClues wrote:Hey you! Yeah, you! Are you a novelist? Do you hope to publish a novel one day? Then do we have the workshop for you!

Join us for a novel publication workshop hosted by BluesClues!

This workshop will cover topics like...

    • should I pursue traditional or self publication?
    • how do I find agents and publishers?
    • what is a query letter and why do I need one?

The workshop will focus primarily on traditional publication, as that's the area I'm knowledgeable about - but many of the topics we cover are also relevant to self-published authors. All novelists and aspiring novelists welcome! Tell your friends!

    Nate Here you go!

    Spoiler! :
    Pick a medium:
    Poetry
    Short Stories
    Novels
    Storybooks

    Pick the correct grammatical usage:
    A, B and C
    A, B, and C
    A, B & C
    Alpha Beta Gamma

    Pick a mascot for YWS:
    Dragon
    Monkey
    Kangaroo
    Octopus

I do my best writing with a:
    Typewriter
    Writing utensil and paper
    Computer
    Cell phone

The Monkey should be the YWS mascot. True or false?
    True
    Yes
    Truer than true
    I agree without reservation

It didn't really work that well. If I remember correctly, had to allow people to switch teams because there was no one in Gryffindor.
