  • That moment when in the midst of dealing with pressing issues, you make a terrible decision on where to live for a whole year of uni . . . Protip, don't let your family convince you that having a washing machine in your flat (rather than downstairs in some big shared space) is more important than being able to sleep at night.
    Spoiler! :
Especially if you can't stand noise and your flat is an insistent party zone that advertises itself as having 'quiet hours' when it doesn't and you KNOW that from experience but you still make the bad decision because someone keeps bringing up the washing machine and you just make it so you can get them to shut up and leave you alone so you can deal with your coursework.

Liminality Granted, it's hard to tell if any other flats you might want to move to are insistent party zones . . . and that's why networking is important xD But I'm not going to try and fix it because I'm alone in a foreign country, nobody (really) listens and in real life, you can't put people off of something by convincing them there's a ghost that will take its spooky revenge on them unless they stop partying.

Liminality Also like maybe if the organisation that runs the flats also helps organise some of the parties even though they're supposed to be 'tame' parties . . . yeah, maybe that's a red flag. I have all these great observation skills but only after the fact xD

Liminality Really it's MY fault for taking 'washing machine' as an argument . . . plus it's not like my family really needs to do anything to make me doubt my own intuition, I just do it to myself. When they say "hey, yours has a washing machine and that one doesn't" I hear "you'd be very unintelligent to give up that washing machine, because if you do, something bad will happen to you". xD

Liminality Also they probably only brought it up like . . .twice? And to my mind that was like 'oh god if I don't make a decision now, they'll bring it up again tomorrow and I can't have that, because something bad will happen to me!!'.

Liminality Yeah, so protip, don't rush a decision on where you'll live.

Liminality If this goes on I have it in mind to book a hotel or motel even just for a night or two so I can actually get some sleep when writing up final papers . . . All to stave off the collateral damage I might cause from being in the later stages of sleep deprivation.

Liminality So really me doing that should be considered an act of community service or responsible citizenship xD

Liminality Lol I normally don't blabber this much on my wall - the sleep deprivation is really taking a hold of me, my bad xD

Roxanne Here's to a virtual cup of coffee, Lim. Hope everything works out and the parties and washing machine talks give you a break. :)

alliyah That sounds so so rough Lim! Don't blame yourself for something you probably couldn't have known the full extent of- it is tricky balancing family opinions/ pressures and then your own opinions / needs sometimes. I lived in a couple truly attrocious places in college and during my masters degree; one where noise was a factor, so definitely know what a pain that is when you're trying to sleep and study. <3 If reaching out to the people making the noise or running the place isn't an option, investing in a good quality noise canceling earbuds like pixel buds or something may help out some, or even using headphones or earbuds to give some white noise to distract from the partying noise. Hoping some solution can be worked out, or maybe even spooky revenge ghost will convince the partiers to tone things down at a reasonable hour. Sending some more virtual coffee your way. <3333

Spearmint i hope it’s at least an excellent washing machine xD seconding what alliyah said about the noise-canceling headphones! and maybe if there’s a quiet library nearby, that could also be an option??
if all else fails, i can send spooky mint-flavored vibes to help with the ghost plan >.>

Liminality Thanks for the virtual cup of coffee @Rose and @alliyah!

I think I've worked out a white noise solution too alliyah, though I'm hoping to avoid using ear buds because I'm worried about them hurting my ears if I roll around too much in my sleep xD

@Spearmint it's a pretty good one, I think! Yeah, I was mainly having trouble with sleeping rather than studying - if I sleep the night through, I can study in the morning and afternoon, but I do have to sleep in my room (outside of which the noise was taking place).

The noise was a bit better after the 10pm mark yesterday, though - hopefully it'll continue to be better!

Today I bent the truth to be kind, and I have no regret, for I am far surer of what is kind than I am of what is true.
