Jazz, do you remember that one time in a #AskARandomQuestion , I asked you if you were a type of fish or a type of stringed instrument? Yeah, I was just asking in a very cryptic way if the "bass" part of your name was pronounced "b ah s" or "b ae s"

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I've got it figured out, though.

Speaking of which, have any of you ever thought about writing a memoir or enjoy reading memoirs? Have any fave autobiographies or memoirs you've read?

alliyah I took a memoir class in college and found it super compelling to be able to read my classmate's memoir projects. Got 4 chapters written in mine and have an outline if I were to pick it up again. I do a lot of "life story telling" for work so I honestly don't think itd be too farfetched for me to write one one day. We'll see!

Carlito I *love* memoirs!!! I love hearing people's stories and learning about people.

I literally just finished Outofshapeworthlessloser by Gracie Gold and it's probably my favorite memoir to date. I'm a huge fan of Gracie and her memoir was my most anticipated book this year. She's my favorite modern figure skater and the book was a solid 10/10 for me.

Spoiler! :

but if you're not familiar with her - be forewarned that her story is dark and content warnings include eating disorders, severe depression, suicidal ideation, sexual assault, and parental substance use. It's a super well-done book and nothing is graphic or salacious, but read with caution if those are sensitive topics for you <3

Loved Evanna Lynch's memoir - The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting (trigger warning for eating disorders, but she purposefully tries to write in a way that won't be triggering for others struggling with an ed).

@alliyah (1) welp I always said I'd never write a mystery (even though I love reading mysteries) bc I'm not smart enough to figure out how to write a mystery, but. now I am. doing that. so. that genre. (2) how much time I spend writing/editing depends on the day ~~and also how work goes bc if work is slow I'll write there~~ so there's really not a good average I can give!

why is your pfp a penguin?

OKAY SO. my pfp is not just any penguin. my pfp is a dapper but grumpy penguin named Frederick Digby.

back when my partner and I both worked at the same grocery store, he did the pricing and I cashiered (among other things), so often I had to write down the UPC numbers of items that hadn't rung up or had rung up wrong. if things got slow and I was working register, I'd doodle little cartoons to go along with the UPCs.

the first cartoon was my partner and Frederick Digby trying to defeat the evil computer that kept kicking items out of our system. I don't really have the patience for multi-panel comics, but I enjoyed Frederick Digby a lot, so after that first comic, I started drawing Frederick Digby more often, along with some other characters:

- a giraffe named Sergeant Longshanks, who was so tall you never saw his face ~~so I didn't have to figure out how to draw a giraffe's face~~
- an octopus just as dapper as Frederick Digby but far friendlier and more cheerful whose name alas I have forgotten

my pfp is the last remaining doodle of Frederick Digby. my partner still has the doodle in his wallet. it has survived multiple new wallets <3

[note bc I feel like the next question I might get is "if you are a lesbian, why is your partner a he": aside from the existence of he/him lesbians of which neither I nor my partner are one so don't ask me to explain that, I used to ID as bi and my partner used to ID as straight. now we both ID differently, but we love each other so we're still together except it's a polyamory situation (in theory; in practice I haven't dated around).]

But I have seen other vampire content and now I’m not really impressed with the movies.

However, I do like them for their nostalgia. The only real problem I have with the movies is the whole Jacob and Renesmee thing. That’s just plain weird and there is nothing anybody can do to change my mind.

JazzicusMaximus I have bought a geode, but never found one. Yes, I have found pretty rocks! My family and I love going to the coast, and one of our favorite things to do is beach combing. I found this one piece of agate, which had a unique sort of cavern in it(I don't have a better word for it, I'll probably show a picture when I get the chance), and I had some friends in a rock shop turn it into a necklace.

alliyah @Zyria - How did I get into chickens?
I have always loved birds (they're pretty, poetic, fun personalities) - my mom's office door used to be covered in cut out pictures of birds that I had drawn and colored. When I was a small child my sister and I used to go to daycare everyday and our babysitter lived on a farm and she had baby chickens every year, and if were good we would get to go out and hold them, and so seeing chickens is something I always associate with 'doing good' or like a fun reward in life. As a middle through highschooler my sister and I owned Zebra Finches at home, and our dad owned love birds which made me even more of a bird fan to have them as pets. As an adult, I live in the Midwest in a county that is a top chicken producer for the US; so a lot of people like or own chickens. And then this is sort of how I got into chicken poetry. And now along with Rook I help to run a chicken poetry and art zine - COOP: chickens of our poetry.

I actually have a lot of fish that I would consider my least favorite. But some of my faves... my family used to have a lot of fish as a kid, some I hated some I loved. We used to have a lot of plecos in fact my dad had some that I believe lived around 15 years.
My fave shark is a blue shark. I think I wrote a report on blue sharks for our "animal research report" in like... first grade or something and used to have a shark book as a kid. I also like seeing jelly fish and minnows in the wild. And river salmon show up in a lot of my poems because I very much relate to the phenomenon of "natal homing" in like a spiritual / nostalgic / philosophical way. My name actually literally means "to return home" in Hebrew ~ and I have sort of "sense of destiny" that I think despite having traveled all over the US that some day I am meant to return "home" - both to where I grew up and also in the sense of the eternal home. So I like that salmon also are always trying to get back home too; and I think it makes human's impulse to "return" and dwell on nostalgia sort of make sense right? Many many of my poems deal with this concept like the last line in my signature even here.

alliyah @Plume - fun fact; for a period in high school I was very very into starbursts. I actually collected starburst wrappers in order to make woven candy-wrapper purses and wallets (along with my sister) we would give our friends starburst packets and then ask if they would save the wrappers for us; we probably had to eat hundreds ourselves in order to have enough for these purses that we made. So to this day when I eat a starburst it is very hard for me to throw away the wrapper because I know how much work it took us to collect literally hundreds. To that end, when I eat them, I think more about the color of the wrapper than the taste of the candy; but I like the red flavors best especially the maroon wrapper one which I think is like a cherry? There are some fun blue ones too!

alliyah @Snoink - this was actually a question that I put on a YWS Scavenger Hunt once! And may be placed there again, so is a good one to save the answer to. My fave bird is not actually chickens, but Zebra Finches because I used to have two Zebra Finches named Wally and Polly who I just really loved and thought were beautiful and heartwarming. My sister and I got them from a lady we called "the bird lady" who I could probably write you a whole book about but was one of the most fascinating people I've met in my life. She owned macaws and parrots in her little house and would let them fly around her home (at least to my memory), when I knew her she was going through chemotherapy for cancer and in the last journey of life, I once gifted her with a bird painting that I made. She had a great sense of fun and spiritualism and love. So I think of her whenever I see zebra finches. I also volunteer a lot at nursing homes, and that is a popular bird for people to keep in nursing homes for whatever reason so I still get to see them at one of the nursing homes I volunteer at.

alliyah @creaturefeature - did you know I had a Philosophy minor in college? At one point in my life I was very very into philosophy but these days don't have a ton of time to do philosophy reading, though would consider my background in ethics to be pretty essential to my current work and core to my personality. My favorite philosophers are Immanuel Kant and John Rawls. My least favorite would probably be Nietzsche. I like deontology and virtue ethics much more than consequentialism. And find Kant's moral philosophy of "Perfect and Imperfect Duties" to fit pretty well with how I understand morality.

Prince Iridesence is definitely up there on my list of favorites. I believe I've mentioned him to you before lol in a reply to one of your wallposts, but regardless, the meaning behind his character, and the emotion in his backstory just makes him so precious to me. He's my best boiii <3
But I have so many other contenders as well-
Starting with Fatera. She's my sassy little arsonist, and her attitude is just everything to me lmaoooo
And a more recent character, Tzilla. She reminds me of Sol, one of my favorite antagonist from Warriors, a series I loved when I was younger, and I'm excited to explore her further.
Tigress has also slowly worked her way into my heart. She's such an interesting case study in grey. Like, she's not a villain, but she makes some real messed up choices. Despite that she does find herself in true hero fashion.
And then there's Sirona. But then she's based on someone very important to me so naturally I'm attached to her.

Snoink - hmm I usually get protein style burgers because I'm gluten free! I think I had some kind of loaded fries before though, which were good. ^^
Ki1roy - Fantasy/sci-fi. Currently I like sci-fi a little more than fantasy, but I love both of them. :] I like to read things with humor, and original/creative works that either flip or don't follow cliches. (And I like to write the same.)
