    Zyria Hi!

  • Diagnosed with Autism (neurodivergent) and I’m sitting here playing with my feather duster. It’s soft and I do love the texture. They are also ostrich feathers! SQEE!!!

Fishr Fur, I like stroking fur too but the texture has to be soft, bunny rabbits and beavers are also an option, and of course kitties! It’s amazing how much stress is reduced by stroking pleasantly soft things.

Fishr Oh, and, Hi! First post. I want to mention I am blunt, but I am trying to work on that, to not say (or type) the first thought I’m thinking about. It is a very hard skill to learn. I guess honesty is not at all appreciated or appropriate?

  • Idk if it's quite an ASD thing or nooot but-
I have this habit of liiike...avoiding confrontation with people I'm in conflict with, and then being honest about my feelings about them and the situations they've put me in with other people when they aren't present and it's led said people I'm in conflict with to assume I'm being dishonest, two-faced, a bad-mouther/backstabber, or immature and incapable of dealing with my own problems when that's not really the case, or at least, that's not how I'm viewing my actions-I view my actions as venting in private with people I trust about my feelings, not as intentionally attacking another person when their backs are turned, or intentional dishonesty.
It's something that's sadly caused me a-lot of grief and mistrust between me and a lot of people so I'm seriously trying to get out of the habit of doing that because there's no worse reputation then 'immature and dishonest' but it still doesn't take away the damage I've done to myself and others and that there's still people who'll never see me the same way again...

  • Why is there so Little Dystopian Fiction about Eugenics?
It was a Movement that directly influenced N$$Is and a Movement that was based entirely on Ableism.
Most people have never even heard of it.

Fishr Because it’s boring. Then again, many would say my love for US history set in the 1700s is inane and pointless. XD So, to each their own!

  • Y'know I've heard some people liken trying to read faces like playing poker. But how can I even start to try and read your poker face if I don't even know we're playing poker, y'know?

TheWordsOfWolf life is little more than a game of poker. I have no idea what that means but I'm sure i heard it somewhere once

  • oops, I slipped and fell and bought a fidget ring! XP

Well actually I've been wanting to get one for awhile- I've been using a lot more stim toys at home and while I'm a passenger in cars but I've been wanting something more discreet (even though I'm trying to hide stimming less, I still don't want every customer ever to question me lol) and practical for at work.

So I found one I liked that was in my realm of what I was willing to pay- andddd it's like a zipper kind of design where the zipper tab is loose so you can move it around. I Hope it's good- quite a few years ago I tried to order a spinner ring and I ended up accidentally getting two rings that were not at all spinner rings XP

  • So at school my elective is a beginning piano class and I play songs like Fur Elise and Moonlight sonata. It is really boring. Anyways my teacher told me I could bring my own sheet music and when she saw it today she was like "Oh my god. Do you really play that!" and drew a bunch of attention. She was talking about the fingering for one part in Fur Elise where it is like 123 123 and when she said that everyone turned around and saw my red face and tried unsuccessfully to stifle their laughs. Then she asked if she could unplug my headphones so everyone could hear me play or if it would embarrass me. I said it would embarrass me and she was like maybe sometime you could play for me alone and I was like
    okayyyyyy.

  • Anyone else plug their ears walking down the hallway? Like honestly why do kids shriek for no reason?

FireEyes My sensory issues are super bad with my hearing so I basically bring earplugs and headphones wherever I go, you're not alone

  • So I don't think I'm autistic but I believe I am neurodivergent

  • whenever i talk to people who I am not in a close relationship with my words get jumbled up and my face turns red and I can't stop rubbing my hands together. Anyone else?

Fishr I dunno. I rarely talk if at all with people. Conversing is hard and a lot of work, draining my mental batteries quickly. I typically say little and more attentive just listening. If I do talk, it’s quite clearly about a subject I know a lot about, then it’s like, no mute button in the word can shut me up. XD.

  • I hope its okay that I'm posting this here, I don't really know where else to go with this.
I, for a long time, have strongly suspected that I am autistic, I want to get formal testing for it. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me some advice on how I could go about bringing this up to my parents?

Holysocks It's definitely okay that you're posting here! Even if you don't get tested, and you do a lot of research/have done a lot of research and feel strongly that you're autistic- the autism community is usually very welcoming of self-diagnosed individuals because not everyone has access to testing etc.

    So for the advice:

    1. I would do a bunch of research about autism, reading/watching things from both autism specialists aswell as autistics. (autism specialists who aren't autistic still don't always get the experience right, but I still think it's important to look at what they have to say).

    2. Write down everything that makes you think you're autistic. Note all the similarities you notice while researching. Physically write them down so in the moment you're not trying to wrack your brain for everything you know. Even now, when someone asks me sort of what makes me autistic or what traits I have- I blank!

    3. Approaching your parents specifically depends on what your parents are like and what they know about autism/how they feel about autism. Unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation and stigma surrounding autism. So people are often quick to shut down the idea that someone who seems "normal" to them, is autistic. If they're on the fence, I might show them this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt1r-GlRkJg by Yo Samdy Sam. She's a great autistic youtuber- who does videos on autism, and what it was like for her getting diagnosed later in life. Also, Yo Samdy Sam has a lot of videos that are really good, so I'd definitely encourage you looking at some of those aswell!

You might find it easier to write a note to your parents on why you think you're autistic, also.

I didn't really have the chance to learn about autism before my diagnosis- I didn't really have access to the internet at the time, so I didn't know much about it at all. Which was not great during testing because when they asked something like "do you do any repetitive movements?" or something along those lines, trying to figure out if I stimmed or not- I didn't think I did! I didn't even know what stimming was, and I for a long time after my diagnosis, I didn't think I really stimmed at all. But I did- I actually have a short throat clearing/hum sound I make while I'm trying to fall asleep, that I didn't even notice until my boyfriend pointed it out (it's really obvious, I don't know how I missed it) and I used to zip my hoodie up and down really fast over and over as a stim, bounce my leg/foot a ton. Anyway my point is, use this time to familiarize yourself with what traits of yours match and give it a little time if possible- because at least in my case, some things took a long time for me to clue in/start realizing were traits of me being autistic.

Hopefully this helps a little! Best wishes! Feel free to keep us updated/ask more questions c:

  • So I attend an Autism School where everyone is on the spectrum in some way shape or form. However I have on occasion heard some of my fellow students use Ableist slurs for self-deprecating humor........

It may be a stupid thing to be uncomfortable with but, I am.

  • TW: Autism Speaks and all caps

    Spoiler! :
EW I JUST GOT AN AD ON YOUTUBE FOR AUTISM SPEAKS AND I AM DISGUSTED, I CANNOT

Zyria Don't even get me started on Autism Speaks :(
    Mar 26, 2022

JohnKlue I saw a teacher at my school wearing an Autism Speaks shirt...........................
I reported it. Because nobody who is working with Autistic children should be under the impression that Autism Speaks is a good organization.

  • do any yall have this problem where someone will tell you something like "Put your dishes in the dishwasher" and a few minutes later they're like "Why didn't you start the washer?" Dude, "put your dishes in the dishwasher" and "start the dishwasher" are two totally different actions and you only specified that I do one. Of course I didn't do the other.

WeepingWisteria That gets me every time! It’s so frustrating.

  • Advice on writing autistic characters

Edit: I'm also Autistic. I just wanted more perspectives.

Zyria 1. Do research, and talk with people who have autism
    2. Write them as people, not as 'someone with autism'. Remember being neurodivergent is as natural to us, as being neurotypical is to you, and regardless of our disabilities, we're very much happy and fulfilled people.

    Jan 29, 2022

WeepingWisteria Well, it's important to remember that everyone autistic person experiences autism differently. It's a vast spectrum. Cyone above me might struggle with something you might not and vice versa. It might be best to write multiple autistic characters to honor more of the spectrum if you want. I hope this helps!
