Statistics For September
I really am not sure if anyone is interested in these besides myself, but every so often I get a message asking what the latest stats are. So in case you’re like me and enjoy perusing the numbers, hit the jump for all the latest statistical info for the month of September 2007.
Although YWS stretches back to November 2004, I did not begin collecting detailed statistics of visits & pageviews until mid-August 2006. That makes September 2007 the very first month that I can compare to a year ago.
Comparing September ‘06 to September ‘07 shows a 150% increase in visits, a 140% increase in page views, and a 36% increase in the average amount of time a person spends per visit on the site. Additionally, posting increased during this time by 132%. Below, I’ve detailed first the ‘06 stats followed by the ‘07 stats:
2006:
- 11,352 visits
- 184,439 pageviews
- 12:44 avg. time on site
- 4,989 posts
2007:
- 28,297 visits
- 440,056 pageviews
- 17:19 avg. time on site
- 11,612 posts (most ever)
There is one caveat; that is, in terms of posting, September ‘06 was a very odd month. While all the other numbers are normal, the number of posts was abnormally low. By contrast, there were 44% more posts in October ‘06 with only a 15% increase in visits from September ‘06 to October ‘06.
It’s a bit odd, so I don’t expect the 132% increase in posts to continue. However, I do fully expect to continue to see a 140 to 160% increase in visits in the annual data. It should also be noted that although there was an increase last year in October, November was flat, and December declined due to Christmas, which is in line with past years. Thus, I expect October ‘07 to be the most active month ever on YWS, with November either staying flat or declining a little, and another sharp drop-off in December (followed by a sharp rise in January).

Just so you know, you aren’t alone in loving the stats. I like looking at them, and even though I would probably hate statistics class, I want to understand why drops and rises are in places.
For example, I can only guess that in October, everyone is getting pumped for NaNoWriMo, then in November, everyone is writing, which means less time on the forum. As to December, it’s the end of the year, older students have finals, then Christmas break. Projects are due, grades need to be raised. Its the month where you worry about getting you 89.9 B to an A. XD
Really though, I love looking at the stats and I hope you continue posting them! Is there a reason behind the small amount of posts for Sept ‘06, or no?

For November, it’s mainly Thanksgiving. Everything is up, up, up that month until that third Thursday of the month rolls around. For December, the lowest point of site activity for the entire year always falls on December 25.

Well, that makes sense. Everyone’s doing Christmas stuff on Dec. 25, no matter what country, whereas Thanksgiving is mainly an American thing.
Question: What constitutes a “visit?”
October 3rd, 2007 at 9:07 pm
A visit is whenever you come on the site. It can get a bit complicated, but basically, if you come to the site and stay, that’s one visit. Also, if you come to the site, go to another site, then come back without closing out the browser in the process, that’s still just one visit. But if you come to the site, close the browser, then open up the browser again and come back, that’s two visits.
