Heh, compare the results of this poll to one done 5.5 years ago when I didn't even consider placing Novels as a choice:

That is interesting, Nate! The site has changed a lot since then, though.

I like writing short stories best. It gives you the chance to develop a plot and characters without stretching on for long periods of time. After you write one you get a large dose of accomplishment, because you realize that you have finished something that isn't too big or small, and the knowledge that you could easily do it again is satisfying. Now, if I could only get my short stories to be smaller than 5K.... My short stories are more like novellas, sadly. Maybe novellas will be an option on the poll some day...

Novels because there's just so much to do with novels and you never have to worry about getting bored and it takes you so much longer so you never have to stop and come up with a new idea. You can go so much more in-depth with a novel and the final outcome feels so much better since you spent so much time on it and it's so long.

I prefer to write novels, because you can just keep writing, and thinking of new, crazy characters and twists to the plot. It takes a long time, so you'll have something to do for a while. And there's something really satisfying about creating your own story, and, possibly, your own world.

I replied Novel because I am 14 and that's what I am writing at present.
And, one more reason can be that Novel's market is above all and always Novel writers get famous and rule the writing market( that also includes Novella)

I'm not surprised that 'Novel' is winning-it was my vote too-even though I've been writing a lot of short stories lately.

I voted novels, but I really like writing short stories. It's a tough one because I tend to write the first few chapters of a novel and then another bright idea punches its way into my mind, so even though I try not to I sometimes end up leaving a novel with only a few chapters done - too short to be a novel and too long to be a short story.

Never been able to write poetry though, don't know why. In my Literature class I'm good at analysing it, I've just never been able to express myself through it.

They remind him of how we fall
From the stars back to our cities
Where we've never felt so small

I like short stories over novels. I love the way a finished novels feels, and how the developing chapters give flesh to your characters, but I've only ever finished three novels in my life, so short stories trump that.

I voted short story because I am currently writing a short story for a creative writing class. It was hard for me to choose between short story and novel because the first thing that I ever wrote was a novel (actually it is still in the process of being written). My favorite thing to write are letters, though. They are a good way to express yourself!

I enjoy writing novels because they give you more time to get to know the characters and developed a better story line, plus you become more attached to the main characters and understand where they are coming from....it like a movie vs. a TV series the series is better because you know the characters and you spend years with them! but in a movie you have to get to know them in less than 1:30-2 hours because of the time, the characters are less believable and you are not as attached to them

Novels! =) Plus, when your work is good enough, it can turn into a movie - or a television series.

I chose "none of the above" because "all of the above" was not an answer. Seriously, I have loved writing poetry and novels since sixth grade, and in recent months I've fallen in love with the short story as well. What I prefer to write depends on my mood and what I have to write about.
