I wonder if some people are confused about what is a short story. A short story is any story under 10,000 words, though you usually refer to a story under 1,000 words as flash fiction. After short story, there is the novelette and novella, but no such thing called a "long story."

Novel[la]...can't really write short stories. My mind gets carried away...:P

Poetry's okay, it really depends on my mood. Sometimes stuff just clicks and sometimes it doesn't.

All of the above!

But my real love is writing essays, especially essays with a medical aspect to them.

While I voted for poetry, it isn't necessarily my 'favorite'...

I'm quite indecisive on these things, though.

If this had been somewhere around May or June, I would have said poetry, definitely. However, I have lost that gift (though it only really lasted a good handful of poems) and I guess you would say I'm a lyricist now. So yes, I have given up poetry for the dopey rhyming-stay-in-the-lines form of writing. It's rather difficult, but it's Jon Foreman's fault.
when there's nowhere to go, it's time to grow up.

I would say short stories: But my "short stories" are actually "bits of long stories that will never be extended"
I would like to say poetry: But I'm so rubbish at it, it makes me depressed that I'm a writer who can't write.
So I chose Other. Because my preferences are: wannabe poems that deserve nothing more than the bin, and slices of novels wasting paper or computer memory, like slices of nut cake made by someone allergic to nuts taking up space in the pantry...

Poetry, because I find it easier to write.

I love writing poems
I get really impatient writing stories a lot of the time
Or I just write the interesting parts and don't get around to writing the technical parts
And, writing to me is art, and poems are definitly arty
But honestly, I love reading stories and novels too

Short stories are much better than poetry. I'm horrible at poetry. Short stories give you more writing skills and are funner to actually write because you can make a plot and get to know the characters while poetry is usually impersonal and doesn't give you the same feeling.
There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.

I like both but out of those I'd choose short stories. I like all lengths of stories though. My poetry isn't very good usually and is almost always written spur of the moment.
