I have some questions regarding dogs in 1800s America. What breeds would go unremarked in a town setting? Were boys often seen with dogs in tow?

Have you tried contacting their historical society and asking for pictures of boys with dogs?

http://www.canterburyhistorical.org/contact.php

From the quick google searches I did, bird hunting dogs seemed to be slightly popular in America.
