"Vacations are for anyone who wants to explore or escape stress," Emery said. "They're for people who are looking for something or want to try something new. You don't really need rhyme or reason to go on vacation."

“But they cost so much money,” Ky argued. “You need to have a reason or at least have earned one.”

"You've got loads of money," Emery pointed out. "You're Tomhas Loquitur's daughter. Plus, Gaius would be chomping at the bit to go traveling again. After the war and the whole gods thing resolve, of course. You should ask them!"

“Maybe,” Ky agreed lamely. Neither of them would even let her go home. Was she really to believe they’d let her go anywhere else?

"Just give it some time. You should read up on those places for sure, though!"

“I may.” She dipped her head and offered a weak smile. They’d come full circle and landed her directly back into the topic he was trying to distract her from. The reminder that she was trapped here. Still. With an uncle who hated her and a well-meaning but smothering aunt. Anything to keep her away from home since her parents didn’t want her anymore. What was the use in pretending they’d let her go — or that she’d be happy — anywhere else? There was none. Just false hope.

"I hear there's a diary from one of the places that's bound in human skin." He wrinkled his nose. "Gaius says it's an honored thing in that culture, and it's how they preserve a person's memory or something?"

A feel like fingernails on a chalkboard sounded scraped down her spine. She shuddered, frowning. “That’s horrifying.”

He nodded fervently. "That's what I said! But Gaius insists it's a cultural difference and that's all. I think he thinks it's endearing."

"He's an oddball." He smiled uncomfortably. "I'm sure you can get him to go off on a rant about his good times off-continent; he loves to talk about it."

“Mm.” She wasn’t convinced. She’d tried time and again to get that man to speak to her and he generally refused. Just stiff and awkward and intent on refusing to view her as an equal. And, she was fairly certain, making her anxious on purpose. Making a game of forcing her to sweat in silence.
And that was when they were on speaking terms.
Which they no longer were.

He glanced at her. "What, he still hasn't warmed up to you?"

Ky glanced over at him, then away again. If the whole keep didn’t know the drama then she certainly didn’t want to be the one to spread it. But. Well. “…I don’t think Gaius and I are… meant to be friends. We’re too different.”
Or maybe they were too alike. Both assholes in their own unique ways.
