"I will escort him," he said, then spoke in Upper Tongue to Derik. "Hello. My name is Ivar."

"Good day." Gaius shut the door and limped back to his desk. Well, he had quite a lot to think about, now. And possibly a mess to unmake. He'd have to inform Ky as soon as he spoke to Derik, or perhaps before if she returned early enough. Tomhas would need to know, too.
Ivar led the way down the hall in silence.

Derik ordinarily would have made conversation, but as it was, he was too caught up in his own thoughts to worry about being polite. He tried to focus on Zander. Was he near enough to get a letter to? He sure as hell hoped so.

Ivar made no effort to speak to Derik either, seeming content to stride down the hall at an even pace.

Derik focused on taking deep breaths as they walked down the hall and descended the stairs to the first floor. He needed to calm down. Think about what he wanted to say to Zander. What he needed to say to Ash.
