The simple answer is smurfs cannot be choked because there are nothing more than animations on screen therefore they do not have the biological makeup that would allow them to change colour if pressure was applied to there skin.

However if smurfs were real then they would go a brighter blue, presuming they have the same blood system as us.

They cant be communists, for two reasons: 1. most "redshirts" die quickly and 2. Communists woudln't make it into other star systems.
