Ooooooooooooh I loooove quotes. I collect them like a crazed raccoon or something. Aren't raccoons the animals that hoard stuff? :? Oh well. Anyway.

One of my favorite quotes:

"Most of us have far more courage than we ever dreamed we possessed."
-Dale Carnegie

And, one for chocolatechipmuffin:

Winston Churchill once called Clement Atlee, the then prime minister, "a sheep in sheep's clothing." Hehe.

My favorite quote of all time is one of my brother's quotes. "When it rains you get wet." One, cause it's so simple, two cause it's my brother's quote, and three cause it can be used litterally or figuratively. It works so well in so many situations. Notice my signiture...

I have a few more. :P

"Twenty months is like twenty years of waiting for life to begin again and twenty days of old wounds festering." ~Creiha

Creiha's views of the twenty months passing after the end of Flames - she's actually becoming quite profound.

"Then I will endure the speaking stones's wrath." ~Strick

He's faced with a very hard decision in Flames, and this is after he decides he's going to abandon everything he was ever told and do what he knows to be right. One of my faves.

"I'm not hopeless. I'm practical." ~Nalien

Love this quote. Lots of insight into Nalien .

This is from Wistaria Lodge:

"One day, justice will come. That is as certain as the rising of tomorrow's sun..."

And this is my irreverant aside:

"Oh dear. Tomorrow's a solar eclipse."

---

The Raven: "Here, at the end of all things. The end of all things...the end of all things..."
Ta'aire: Dewethvaa...

Before anyone sues me, the Raven is quoting. It's rather a stressful moment for her.
---

Charana: "Brother must fight sister, and the land will be divided upon itself."
The Raven: "You mean..?"
Charana: Yes. The only answer is every country's worst nightmare: civil war.

Oh the foreshadowing!

I hope this one hasn't been said before...

"I can resist anything but temptation." - Oscar Wilde

Not only am I great lover of this poet, playwright, and novelist, but the quote is amazing. It contradicts it's self in an amazing way, and means so much. Temptation is meant to be resisted, it is the thing we resist most. It is probably the only thing we resist, true? Because anything we want to do, might be considered a temptation, and yet, "I can resist anything but temptation." It speaks to me.
β€œIt's necessary to have wished for death in order to know how good it is to live.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo

"I never had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for awhile, and that's the truth, the whole truth. The unvanquished truth, is how Freak would say it ..."- Freak the Mighty, Rodman Philbrick

It doesn't mean anything, outside of the story. It doesn't speak to me, it isn't inspirational or moving in it's own right, but that it's how my favorite book starts. I first read it more than five years ago, and it's still my favorite.

Then, of course, there's the old standby: "not all who wander are lost." I don't think I should need to credit it or explain it. If you don't already know it, shame on you. Shaaaame. *ahem*

There are more where that came from; perhaps when I'll add more when I'm not supposed to be doing homework.

Pros's quote - this is the line with which he ends every single overgeneralization about any nation or people. Most regularly it is applied to the French:

"No wonder they lost the war."

It might be because the French have an unhealthy enthusiasm for cheese...
Because the Russians have an unhealthy enthusiasm for vodka...
Because the Canadians have an unhealthy enthusiasm for curling...

Whatever the nationality, whatever the statement, even if no war is connected to them through common thought, with Pros it will always be followed with "No wonder they lost the war."

This sums up Livny, I find, perfectly. ^_~ I think I might have to find a way to work that into The Chair (along with the "How's the wife?" quote, of course).

I've got quite a few actually.

The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just. ~ Abraham Lincoln

To believe in something, and not to live it, is dishonest. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

True morality consists, not in following the beaten track, but in finding out the true path for ourselves and in fearlessly following it. ~ Mahatma Gandhi

This quote is one of my personal faves and one which surprisingly sums up my MC (in the yet-unwritten novel I'm plotting for my NaNo this year) rather well:

Sail forth, steer for the deep waters only
Reckless, O Soul, exploring
I with thee and thou with me
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go
And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.
-- Walt Whitman

Another of my characters loves this quote:

(i do not know what is is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
-- "somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond" (e e cummings)
Got a poem or short story you want me to critique?

There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way, and not to give others absurd maddening claims upon it. (C D Morley)
