Seventeen year old orphan twins Castiel and Azraelle have lived a peaceful, but strained life in a little village on the edge of the Kingdom of Dolophan. The kingdom had been taken over a year ago by an evil man named Gunther, who has strong dark magic on his side. His brainwashed generals, Sir MacAllister, Sir Lonigan, and Sir Cartney, travel from village to village taking young boys to serve as soldiers in Gunther's army. Meanwhile, the royal family, consisting of King Richard, Queen Katerina, seven year old Princess Cherubia, thirteen year old Princess Eugenia, and fifteen year old Princess Constantinova, has stolen away. Eighteen year old Prince Frederick is the only one uncalled for.

One day, Azraelle witnesses her brother being taken. Her strong and noble heart aches with the desire to save her slightly younger brother so when the smoke clears, she visits an old couple in the village who give her a sword, a royal signet necklace, a white horse named Bravery, and a riding dress. After changing, she takes off out of the village, on her way to the City of Dolophan, the kingdom's bustling castle town, hoping to locate Prince Frederick, who she sees as her only hope. Her brother, along with other village boys, is being trained.

They first are thrown in a basement to rest until dawn, and they use this time to introduce themselves to each other. Castiel meets a boy named Harken, and they quickly form an alliance. They then rest but are rudely awakened by their superiors, who then set each boy against a shapeshifter, who morphs into its enemy. But for Castiel, it morphs into his beloved sister.

Tearyeyed, the boy destroys it. Azraelle, meanwhile, trades her sword for a map, but then must get it translated. She goes to the local tavern, where a boy named Casper translates it for her, teasing her and calling her a "tourist". She has better things to worry about: the bartender, Hilda, has just gotten word from her friend Marie that the prince, the leader of the resistance agains Gunther, is among his citizens in disguise. This angers her, as he is the only one who can help her due to his family's old magic. While this is going on, a boy named Richard Blaine escapes from the training grounds inside the castle walls. Outside the castle, he runs into Azraelle, who believes her brother is inside.

He reveals himself to be a member of the Resistance, and he hides with Azraelle as the newly informed Sir MacAllister looks for Richard, who had been listening in on private information. The soldiers-in-training are moved to another area, and Richard, while agreeing to help Azraelle, also says that it's too risky to follow them directly. With that, they go to the training grounds to look for clues as to where the soldiers-in-training were. Meanwhile the soldiers-in-training go on a mission in a haunted forest called the Ocean of Silence for a medallion to prove their valor.

There Castiel and his newest friend Holly, a girl disguised as a boy, meet Princess Cherubia, who claims to talk to ghosts, including her recently deceased friend, Halley Oberdorf, whose mother, the Dolophan bartender, is unaware of his death. From there Castiel and Holly secretly return the princess to her home. Meanwhile Richard and Azraelle end up going to Sweethearts' Village, where they spend a night at an inn and Azraelle is kidnapped as a sacrifice to the Great Spirit by an underground group called the Sisterhood of Dolophan. With the help of Sister Anastasia, Richard's friend, and two local witches, Koame and Kotame, she is saved. Richard and Azraelle go to the village of Traverse, where they meet members of the king's two secret services: The Royal Service of the Pegasus Knights and the Royal Coalition of the Unicorn Paladins.

One member is Pegasus Knight Corydon and his trusty steed Pota. Later Azraelle learns that her grandfather, her mother's father, is the village chief, Taurus, the oldest and most respected man in Dolophan. He reveals that Azraelle and Castiel's father had been a great pegasus knight, and their mother had been a noble lady, and that they both had been murdered. Meanwhile Castiel and Holly get lost inside the Ocean of Silence and pass out, later waking up in a large house occupied by four completely different and zany sisters, the Singers.
