"You should," Hero said, getting a little more comfortable now that Raiden wasn't trying to touch the cloth around his eyes. "Books are a gift from the gods, even if the gods are bad guys."
He shook his head. "I'm not going back, never. I'm going to go to France, and not come back to cold stinking Germany!"
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
James gave a confused look to both boys. They weren't making much sense.
"My mom and pop taught me how to read. I could show you how to read. Not everyone learns how to read super fast. It's harder for my little sister, but that's 'cause she's five."
He looked a little surprised at the offer. "Really?"
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
Engel smiled, a real smile, if a small one. Moments like this - where nothing was going wrong, were everything was okay, and where someone seemed to actually care - had been so rare in the last few years that he'd almost forgotten what it was like. "Thank you!"
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
Herobrine also scooted over to where everyone was, very eager to join in on the reading. He had read through all of the books on his shelves already. He really wanted to read a new one, even if he didn't end up liking the story. He saw there was a small space between him and Engel, and decided that was where James had to sit. He gave it a small pat to draw his attention to it.
"O-oh," James stuttered as the others gathered around, before clearing his throat and feigning a confidence he didn't have. "You guys want to read as I uh, show Engel the ropes?"
"Gunther taught me some. The first few letters. And, I know the names of all of them! Just...not anything else."
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
"Well that's a good start! So, you know how to sound them out and stuff? Individually?" James asked, pointing at the letter 's' in 'sailor.' "Like, can you sound out this letter?"
"Nein," he shakes his head. "I mean, I can list all the letters, but I don't know what they look like or anything, except for that one." He points at an 'a.'
"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost."
