Any number! There are Storybooks which are always open and accepting, and others which have quite limited number of slots.. in an SB of this type, from my experience, closing at around 7-ish people might be the best idea, especially since part of the plot is that only a few are still around There could be more of them left, but the others could be NPCs (not played by anyone and used by everyone as sort of side characters).. then we can kill off those later, too, if we need to kill off someone xD
What I'm curious about is, is there an age limit for the characters?

Okay, I'm going to say that eight people including my character is good. And I totally forgot, I'm thinking that no one under 16 but there's really no upper bracket. I mean they're mortal people so, no limit but keep the age within reason.
