After that you can figure out who is going to be partners with who, you can also figure out wether you want a platonic or romantic partnership. Remember though, you get bonus power ups the stronger the bond!

For the purposes of match power-ups, is a strong platonic relationship considered equal to an equally strong romantic relationship? Because I've met people to whom romance means nothing but their friends are their world, and the other way around.

Of course, it's just that a romantic relationship is the most common. What kind of partnership you have is up to you and your partner. a
