I was feeling inspired by my therapist, so today's poem is free-verse (and a bit longer)
9. Title: Because we choose to forget.
Hey there, little one, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?
I see you hiding in the shadows of memory,
A flicker of innocence in a world grown weary,
A whisper of laughter drowned by the weight of time.
I remember when we used to dance in the rain,
When every puddle was an ocean waiting to be explored,
When scraped knees were badges of honor,
And the world was an adventure waiting to unfold.
But somewhere along the way, we lost sight of you,
Buried beneath the debris of dreams we outgrew,
Concealed behind walls of forgotten pain,
We traded your laughter for silence, a bitter refrain.
We chose to forget, didn’t we?
To bury the echoes of shattered innocence,
To drown out the screams with hollow laughter's pretense,
In our desperate bid to feel like kids again.
But in our haste to escape the shadows,
We left you behind, didn’t we?
A casualty of our own survival,
A casualty of our own forgetfulness.
So here we are, face to face,
Two halves of a fractured whole,
One seeking redemption, the other seeking solace,
In the wreckage of our shared history.
I’m sorry, little one, I’m sorry we forgot you,
I’m sorry we silenced your voice, hidden from view,
But listen, can you hear it, faint as a distant chime?
The echo of your laughter, lost in the sands of time.
So let’s dance again, you and I,
In the rain-soaked streets, where dreams were currency.
And the moonlit gardens of memory,
Where the world was a canvas waiting to be painted.
So here’s to you, little one,
Here’s to the laughter we cast asunder, now spun,
May we find it again, in the depths of our shared history,
For in embracing our past, lies the path to our future's mystery.
