Ayumi sighed, striking her own man again. He collapsed at her feet; she tied his hands and feet and lifted him as well, following her sister back toward the camp. The Genin somehow managed to drag the third rogue behind them, shoving him up into the settlement with the others.

"Not that it's unexpected, but the ANBU and I don't necessarily agree...on anything," Ayumi whispered to Emi. "You know my reputation."

Emi smiled and nodded. "You never know. I think they can make an exception for one day."

Ayumi rolled her eyes, sitting down at the entrance to their shelter. The Genin gathered around as she pulled out meal packs and gave one to each of them. "Eat up. And hydrate! I know today's been rough."

**Es no problema.**

Emi left the others where they were and began to walk though the ruined outpost. She stopped not far from the group's "camp". Akio was standing in the shadow of a towering piece of rock. His arms were crossed, eyes closed, and he had his head down. He apparently hadn't heard her approaching. She pulled a kunai from her belt and moved in behind him before placing the knife at his throat. Akio's eyes shot open and he went rigid.

"You should always be aware of your surroundings." Emi said as she removed the knife and returned it to her pouch.

Akio looked back down at the ground. "Sorry, sensei. For earlier."

Emi looked at him, then sighed. "I understand your eagerness to fight, Akio. Believe it or not, I was once a Genin, too. I hated having to do D- and C-rank missions. But I never would have made it to where I am today if I hadn't listened to my sensei. He taught me everything. There's a reason senseis are assigned, just like there's a reason for you being in squads. You just have to accept those reasons. I want to prepare you for what you'll face as a ninja, and I want you to excel as one. So you're going to have to trust my judgement, okay?" Akio nodded solemnly. Emi patted his shoulder, "Come on and get something to eat, you don't want to pass out from hunger in front of the ANBU, do you?"

Akio's eyes lit up. "Are we actually going to meet the ANBU?"

Emi smiled. "Yes, you are. They'll be here soon, so let's get back, eat, and get some rest."

"Yes, sensei!" Akio hurried back to the camp excitedly. He probably wasn't going to sleep too much tonight.

Emi laughed quietly and followed the boy at a walk.

Ayumi and the Genin looked up when Akio came running into the camp, practically bouncing off the walls. He turned and looked at Emi, who was walking behind him, smiling. "Are you really, really, sure? We're really going to meet the ANBU?!"

She laughed. "How many times must I tell you - yes!"

Ayumi chuckled when Chiro perked up. "For real?"

She nodded, as well. "Which is why you guys should eat. I don't want them on my ass when you collapse from hunger and thirst," she joked. Akio sat beside Chiro; she couldn't help but chortle when they began to race to finish their food. Haruki and Naoko rolled their eyes, acting disgusted by the boys' manners, or lack thereof. The senseis laughed hysterically at the entire scene; who knew Genin could be so entertaining?

But all humor in Ayumi faded within the next hour. The ANBU arrived right before dusk. Emi greeted the captain - whatever the hell the name was, Ayumi didn't care - like any old friend. Ayumi stood back, leaning against the door. Akio and Chiro looked around her, beaming in admiration. "Look! It's the ANBU!"

***I couldn't find the name of the current ANBU captain, but I know what he looks like. He was the one leading the squad that tried to help the Third during the Sand/Sound invasion, but got stopped by the barrier. I'm just going to call him Senku.***

Night was just beginning to fall when Emi heard the light sound of the ANBU landing outside of the camp. It sounded like the near-silent flap of an owl's wing, but it was distorted in a way that let Emi know the squad had arrived. She stood and walked to the door of the slanted building and peered out at the three masked men, she was a little surprised to see the ANBU captain, Senku, was one of them. Apparently this problem was worse than she and Ayumi first imagined.

She stepped out of the doorway and walked up to the trio. "Lovely to see you, Senku, and we're glad you came."

"It's great to see you, too, Emi. What's the situation?" Senku said.

Emi nodded and explained what they'd found following the message she'd sent. The ANBU captain nodded and touched his chin with a knuckle. "We'd been monitoring the Rock border outposts closely for a long time after the war, but this attack has come long after we lessened security nearly fifty years ago."

"Meaning the culprit wasn't waiting to strike, they planned this recently." Emi added.

"Exactly." Senku nodded.

"Well, you'll be happy to know one of our captives is willing to cooperate. He's already revealed to us that he and his comrades were employed by a man named Koiko."

"Very well, we'll interrogate him further. Are these the only two you managed to capture?" Senku asked as he followed Emi past the gawking Genin and a sullen Ayumi, into the building.

"Unfortunately, unanticipated circumstances kept us from executing a successful recon and detaining." Emi said, showing the trio to a corner of the camp where the two captives lay, still unconscious. Senku looked at her, but said nothing. He faced the captives again and Emi left the ANBU members to their work. She motioned to the Genin to go out the door. "Let's go, you guys. You don't need to see this." The children looked at her with a mixture of confusion and fear, more than likely expecting to hear the cries of torture in the next moments, but Emi knew better. The ANBU's interrogation tactics didn't always rely on torture, but nevertheless, Genin didn't need to witness them.

Haruki whimpered softly as Ayumi followed behind the youths, blocking their views from going inside the building. "What are they going to do to them? I mean, I know they're evil and all, but..."

"Don't worry," Emi answered coolly. "The ANBU's tactics are generally secret, but they won't harm them."

A white lie, and Ayumi knew it. But it would have to suffice, just for the children's sakes. They would lead them away, out of earshot just for their sense of security, and camp elsewhere until the ANBU finished their tasks, however long that might take...

Ayumi observed the Genin. Akio and Chiro were both trembling slightly, antsy and anxious. Of what? Probably shock of seeing the ANBU so close, or with thoughts of what might be occurring in the campsite...or maybe even the potential of a fierce battle ahead of them.

Shit... the woman thought, sighing. This entire mission was getting worse and worse, quickly spiralling toward a lethal crash. It was supposed to be at most a C-rank; it was now, quite obviously, a high-B or higher, something fit only for Jounin, specialists, and ANBU. Ayumi caught Emi's gaze at last and nodded off to one side; Emi just nodded. They would talk as soon as they got the Genin settled in while they waited. If they waited.

Emi chewed her lip as she thought over their situation. The best option would be to send the Genin back to the village, but there was no possible way for that to happen. The ANBU couldn't afford to waste time babysitting Emi and Ayumi's students, much less could the two senseis send the Genin off alone. But they couldn't leave the outpost, it would risk the rogue ninja escaping or attacking another outpost along the Rock border.

Emi watched the Genin try to settle down at the temporary campsite. They were showing all kinds of nervous ticks. Naoko kepting shifting sitting positions, and Jinrou was picking at the hem of his shirt. Chiro and Akio kept standing up, Haruki sat curled and trembling next to Naoko, and Taiki was drawing in the loose dirt with a fingertip. Emi wondered for a moment how long it would take the Genin to learn enough self-control to efficiently mask their emotions. She glanced up and met Ayumi's eye, the kunoichi signalled to her and Emi nodded. She spared one last glance at the Genin before walking away from the camp with Ayumi.

"What is it?" She asked when they were far enough away.

"You know what," Ayumi hissed softly, bluntly. "This shit we've gotten ourselves into."

Emi nodded. "I do know what you mean."

Ayumi stared at her sister. "Koiko can't wait; things can spiral out of control at any given moment, dropping our villages into another war. We need to pursue - "

"But what about the Genin, Ayumi?" Emi hissed back, a little annoyed and becoming her typical, aristocratic, diplomatic self. "They aren't strong enough to handle this kind of mission, much less be sent back to the village unaccompanied. And don't think I'm going to drop them on Senku."

Ayumi sighed, nodding. "I know..." Then her eyes widened as she got an idea. "We could train them some more...while we move. Then it's problem solved - they'll be more prepared, and they won't be alone. What do you think?"

Emi thought about it. It could work, but the training would have to be incredibly intense if the Genin were going to improve enough to survive this mission. The Jounin may even have to use extreme measures to teach them what they needed to know in the small amount of time they had. This whole mission had gone to hell in a handbasket before anyone realized it, and now the teams were in way too deep to go back.

Emi turned to Ayumi. "You know what we're going to have to put them through, right?" She asked her sibling. Ayumi nodded, her gaze fixed on Emi, waiting for her answer.

With a sigh, Emi looked back at the camp. This wasn't exactly how she had hoped to teach her students, but the circumstances didn't offer any leeway. "It's probably the only chance we've got. We'll start as soon as dawn breaks."

Ayumi looked away, toward the sun. It was beginning to set in the west. If only Sarutobi was still here, or maybe even Kakashi or Iruka. Any of their's advice would be welcome, and greatly appreciated.

But they're not here. We are, just me and Emi. And six Genin...

She could worry about that later. All she had to do now was think of something that could help strengthen them, make them stronger and faster. She would have to come up with some kind of training strategy soon, if they were going to succeed. She could always spar with them all at one time; Kakashi had made his climb trees before their rematch with Zabuza and Haku...and Jiraiya made Naruto walk on water. Maybe a blend of the three would suffice? It would build their control and endurance, as well as improve their reflexes, speed, and strength... Then she could teach them strategy that would help keep their backs and necks protected...

She nodded, that would have to do. There was nothing else she could do.
