They're little pieces of information that temporarily save data about the sites you visit. They are usually used to store your username and password when you log into sites like this so you don't have to keep signing in with every new page. Some also track different sites you visit and gather information, so it's best to clear the cookies every once in a while. I do it everyday, out of paranoia.
Crysi gave a good definition of cookies so I'll leave it at that, except to add that one need not worry that I am tracking any information with cookies. You can trust me that since for one, I'm morally against it, and for two, there's no way that I could do it with the current code structure
I think I got an idea about what's causing it, though I'm still not sure. One possiblity is that some are logging in through the top boxes (the ones that appear on every page if you are not logged in). The other possibility may be that people are getting logged out after a certain period of time. So if possible, please tell me how long you were logged in for before the site logged you out.
Could it have something to do with browser updates?
Firefox has recently released updates. It could be that the passwords and logins are dumped when it installs the next version.
I'm not certain about the others. I've had occur once or twice, but I don't remember the incidents too well. I think they were around the time Firefox released 1.03 and 1.04.
Finally Nate thiss happen to me sometimes but it seems to happen when different people are online
