I have been writing a horror story I started since late June. I thought it would be a simple 4,000 or 5,000 words. Now it's TWICE that. :o If it continues on to like between 10,000 and 15,000 words, do you think it could count as a novella or a REALLY long short story?
And we'll be a dream...

Probably a long short story. Waaay too short for a novella. Even 50,000 is considered a novella.

It's not a short story, and it's not a novella.

Short story ---------------- novella ------------- novel

We have to read between the lineees!

Short story ------------story-------------novella.

It just a story dude.

Here are guidelines:

Microfiction: 100 words or less
Flash fiction: 100-1000 words
Short story: 1000-7,500 words
Novellette: 7,500 - 20,000 words
Novella: 20,000 - 50,000 words
Novel: 50,000 - 110,000 words
Epic: 110,000 words or more

Unfortunetly, Novellettes are rather hard for us, the authors, to get published, as they are two long to insert nicely into a magazine and too short to stock in libraries and bookstores. So it might be a good idea to come up with a sequal and merge them into one book. However, if this is your course of action, you'll have to be careful. Novellas are still short, so publishers may not like it. However, publishing online is a good solution, as online readers rarely have the patience to sit through a full length novel while reading on their computer.

However, if you become well-established in the writing field, you should be able to publish something of any length easily, including Novellas and Epics.
