I'm looking forward to a new RTS (Real Time Strategy) game that is coming out. It is called Supreme Commander and it is supposed to be released early 2007.

In Supreme Commander, you can play one of three factions: The Aeon, the Cybrans, and the UEF (United Earth Federation). You're the Supreme Commander, in charge of ending the infinite war.

The Aeons are a religious group that have been taught by a now extinct alien race. They are rumored to have special abilities of their own. The cybrans are basically cyborgs that are trying to live forever. The UEF is an empire that is trying to regain control of the vast human empire.

To find out more about this game, go to the website.

The brains behind the operation is a guy known as Chris Taylor. He has made several RTS's, including Total Annihlation, Dungeon Seige, and probably some other stuff that really isn't important.

Supreme Commander is going to be unique, in that it will have an interface that brings strategy back into the genre. Key to this is having the option of zooming in on a certain area of a map, or being able to zoom out to see the entire theater of war. His goal isn't so much to create a game, so much as a simulation of war. What this means is that there is an incredible amount of time and energy into bringing aspects of modern warfare into this game.

There are so many features in this game that have never been seen before. For instance, the idea of a nuclear weapon is fundamentally changed. Instead of being a large scale explosion that rocks a screen or a bunch of screens, it is an explosion that actually obliterates an entire portion of the map and stays that way for several minutes after the blast.

Another feature is in the actual user interface. I've already mentioned the zoom capability, but there is another interesting idea. Depending on the number of times you click on your mouse, you can communicate how desperately you want something dead. One click basically tells it to target that while still following a pre-planned course. Two clicks tells it to fire at the target only enough to destroy it. Three clicks (and more?) tells the selected units to drop everything and focus all fire on that unit.

As you may have guessed, there are units that are worthy of three clicks. In a trailer released by Gas Powered Games (the company in charge of Supreme Commander) there is an experimental unit featured. It is known as "The Monkeylord." It is a massive spider-like unit that is capable of destruction on a massive scale. It has a massive laser beam of death and absorbs an ungodly amount of punishment. It takes about a minute for a very large force of units to finally kill one. There are experimental units for all three factions, but as of this posting, not much is known about them.

Supreme Commander is looking to rejuvenate the RTS genre in ways that haven't been imagined before. Keep your eye out for it.

this seems sort of like Starcraft. which was immensly fun. Sounds like a cool game. I'll have to check it out.
