Posted: Wed Aug 16, 2006 4:17 am Post subject: Historical Fiction Contest (For Those Who Normally Wouldn't) |
|
|
In honor of my shirking on Hourglass and several critiques I owe people...
How about a contest?
WHAT? Historical Fiction contest- mainly targeted at people who normally wouldn't write such.
WHY? The HF forums are kinda lonely! Friends are always nice...
And so, the RULES:
MWAHAHAHA! JUST SO I CAN HAVE MORE CONTROL: You can only choose from a few select years, which are:
-1244
-1450
-1598
-1766
-1849
-1902
-1955
WHAT DO I DO AFTER I'VE PICKED A YEAR?: Research, of course! You don't have to do a lot- I'm not looking for total accuracy- but do get a feel for culture and current events. (For God's sake, you're not writing a thesis!)
HOW LONG SHOULD IT BE?: A short story. Basically? 3000-10,000 words. A little longer than most, but I'm sure you can handle it.
HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE?: Three weeks. That means, the contest ends September 5, for the slow among us.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?: 'You' as in 'Sam'. Haha, yes! I'm judging! I'm just looking for a story that's...er...good. Good as in makes me think, without being over-the-top, slap-in-the-face historical fiction. Basically, if your character is peasant during the French Revolution and knows everything that's going on inside the King's chambers...you're not going to win. Subtlety is key- and keep with your character.
Also, I like fashion...
WHERE DO I POST?: Post in the Historical Fiction section with a 'HFC' tag in the title somewhere. At the end of your time limit, do some quick editing with all the reviews you've gotten- and PM the final draft to me! I'll pick the winner within a couple days. I might even have a helper or two- just for fairness. Let's face it, I'm a sucker for the 50s.
If you want to send me some notes you took for research, too, that might earn you extra brownie points.
ALSO: Make sure you include the year in your draft in the forums and the story you send to me. Basically...if you picked 1244 and yet all your characters are in poodle skirts, I sha'n't be pleased.
WHAT'S THE DRAW?: Er...what do you get?
All contest entries posted in the forums automatically get a critque by moi.
The winner gets 1000 points and all of their work (guaranteed) critiqued for the next year. That means, I'm off the hook next September...but for the time being, the winner's guaranteed a response to every work they post. Even fantasy stuff and poetry. And trust, me, it'll be a good critique- the rage and indignation I feel at having to read every stinkin' thing will be channeled into it.
So! If you've got questions or comments, PM or post away below! |

Oh, I'd so do it (except for your careful avoidance of picking any year from 1777 - 1815)
But all I write is HF these days.

I'll give it a go, I think. I've never written anything that wasn't the sort of thing that hit me over the head until I wrote it, so coming up with a story instead of "finding one" should be fun. |

| Sam-would it be okay if I entered because my genre is historical fiction, but I actually haven't written a short story in that genre yet? It sounds awesome! And crits for the next YEAR? You rock! |

Like Jack, I'll observe quietly but this is great! I have a firm grasp and I know what this genre entails so I'll step aside and allow others to give it a go. Indeed, the HF section is a bit lonely. I think once everyone has a go at it, you'll all be hooked!
*evil laugh*
As for me, I might start a HF piece about the War of 1812. But that's way down the road.
Good luck everyone, and have fun with your HF pieces! |

Sure!
Even if you do normally write historical stuff, you can still enter.
1777-1815?
Hehe...you know those people would win automatically. |

Well, if Jack and fishr are out, I might give it a go.
Very cool, contest, Sambo. Looks great. |

You should have made the date 1768.
The Circular Letter that provoked, and ultimately started the 'Boston Massacre,' in the long run.
Sam Adams was a naughty boy, LOL! A terriost, but my favorite.
EDIT:
Hmm... This contest has inspired me. I will write a piece within the time frame of 1766 - just for fun, so no worries. I'm not entering, just having fun within the genre. |

Wiping a forehead is an understatement, lol!
I'm halfway done, and those who don't have a grasp on Eighteenth Century won't run and stab me! My short story is written to support the reader that doesn't have the grasp on Eighteenth Century, but at the same time, you will learn something.
Well, I might as well my new, and unfinished piece, LOL!
EDIT: It's posted, ha ha!! |

| Does it have to be that EXACT year, or can it be in the general range of that time...like, 1492, instead of 1450? |

Nope!
Well...unless it's equally obscure. If you like the number '3' better than '4', for instance, and want it to be 1234...that might be okay.
1492 wouldn't work mainly because I could sing you a song I learned in kindergarten about it. |
