This is an English project we have to do... I hate her when she thinks of stuff like this... we have to write a diary on a famous person from her 'list'. I chose Alaeck as you can see. Needs to be at least 3 pages, double spaced, and 10 entries. I have the first few entries done and I wanna know if there is anything I can change, and how its doing. Its a bit ficioness but its also true facts, so I dont know where it belongs. Perhaps here...

The Memoir of Alexander Graham Bell

June 16th, 1870

Scotland

I’ve been given this journal in hope that I might get over the loss of my older brother, to express my thoughts and keep track of them. To begin, my name is Alexander Graham Bell. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 3rd, 1847. I had two brothers, Edward and Melville. Edward died a few years ago from tuberculosis, and recently Melville caught the same disease and is gone from us. In a few weeks, I will be leaving Scotland with my mother, my father and my sister in law to a place called Canada.

It will be an interesting trip for us. My mother is deaf, and we can barely communicate with her verbally. I have discovered though when I put my mouth to her forehead and speak fairly loud, she can hear the vibrations and understand me. Others use the hearing pipe, but not me! I find this quite fascinating that she can understand me through the vibrations. Mother needs me for something; I don’t know when I’ll have time to write again, perhaps on the journey.

August 14th, 1870

Ontario, Canada

It’s been two months since I’ve written in this journal. The journey was hard, but we’ve made it. My family and I have settled in Brantford, Ontario. When we traveled through the United States, we could see the hardship from the Civil War. I remember that time. The entire world heard of it. It was 1861 when it began. I was about 14 when the news first came that the States started their war. It was a bit confusing when I was but a boy. I did not understand why people were so concerned about it; at least the ones who had relatives in the States. Now I do understand, and I can tell what happened from what I know.

I believe the war started when the Northern states decided that slavery was barbaric and wrong. They fought for the freedom of the slaves. The Southern States though, didn’t know what they were really fighting for. They just wanted to protect their lands, and keep the slaves. This war lasted until 1865. Many battles were fought, near uncountable wounded. In the end the North did win, but at a terrible price. My friends and I were cheering for the Southern states, not knowing what was going on. Now I see how foolish I was, and the United States, as they are now called, are still suffering the loss of their brethren.

November 13th, 1970

Ontario, Canada

I’ve been looking around for a job involving people who are deaf. I believe that I have found a job down in a place called Boston. It seems like a good place to work. It’s called the Boston School for Deaf Mutes. I believe this will be a good job for me. I have the experience, and as I’ve said before, I find communication fascinating. I’ve always loved music, and I can really help those in the school. I must talk with my parents about it but I believe I shall go. Boston sounds like an exciting place to visit.

December 31st, 1970

Ontario, Canada

Its New Years Eve and I’ve decided to go to Boston to accept this job. I’ll be leaving in a few months to go to the city. I’ll miss my family, but this will be a great way to learn more about conversing, with deaf and with the hearing. My family and I are all gathered around, for what may be our last gathering before I set off to Boston. I wish my brothers were here to celebrate with us, a new life, a new job, a new country. The possibilities are endless, and I certainly won’t risk ignoring any opportunities.

April 2nd, 1971

Boston, Massachusetts

I’ve finally arrived in Boston. It’s a big city, and very exciting. I believe a lot of things will happen while I’m here. I’m hoping working at the school will help me with my search of verbally communications. I believe it is possible for one person to talk with another, and be in another room, without shouting. Something similar has formed, it’s called the telegraph.

One uses a device to send a message to another through the wire, but instead of voices, you listen for a various click and taps, and translate them into words. Queen Victoria and a president, Buchanan I believe, did such a thing over the ocean. If one can do it over a vast ocean, it should be possible for one to do that, only vocally. I hope that my studies can continue and I can discover the key to such a device. Time to get to work; I hope this works out for the best.

It is a nobel try for an assigned piece of semi creative writing. Much better than anything I've ever done for any class thats asked me to do it.

I generally tend to think that AGB spoke and wrote with a more Twainesque style, but if thats not what you were going for, then its a non issue.

I can't aide you at all with the facts, as I don't know much about the man myself. I also don't know anything about the way your teacher grades, so I can't be much of a help there either. I think though, that if you continue with this style, and stick to the requirements, that it will be just fine.

Neat piece! It reminds me of that "Dear America" series. Even though this is for school, I'm sure you could do some more with it. You could expand the entries, and take some more "artistic liberties" with it. There are many possibilities. Overall, I think you did a great job. I hope you make a good grade!
