Would it be possible to see how many minutes/hours/days/weeks etc. we've spent logged onto YWS? Not how long since we signed up, but how long we've actually been logged onto the site.
Don't know if it's possible, it was a just an idea I thought was cool. |
Hahaha... I don't even want to know. -_- |

Hey, I was not sure where to ask this at so I'll just ask it here, lol. How long should my chapters be? Usually my chapters are between 3,000 word to 6,000 words. Should I make them smaller for this site?
Thanks,

I have a question/request. I was reviewing pieces, and I wanted to print them out so I could look them over more easily. When I searched the page, however, I found no links to click on that would make the page printer-friendly. So, I tried printing the page as it was, and significant amounts of data were cut off on both sides of the printed page. Am I just not seeing the printer-friendly button? If there isn't a button, would it be a possibility to make one?

All chapters should be kept to 50 words, including the title.
A printer friendly option is a good idea; I'll try putting that together this weekend. |

Hey, Nate--
I'm really enjoying the new portfolio features, but one I've been wanting to use for awhile: can we have the option to sort those search results by date, so that the most recent shows up first instead of being sorted alphabetically? That way, if someone points me to their portfolio and says, "Go crazy", I won't be bumping threads from 2004/spending hours looking through 100+ items to find a date tag. It's not a crisis, it's just something I thought would make returning favors a lot easier to do. ^_^ |

Ooh! I've been looking for this thread! Found it! Okay, so I have a few, very spontaneous ideas...
1) Maybe there could be a YWS "shop" type thing. You could use your points to buy certain things. Well, to buy certain options/extras. It could give you access to more blog templates, possibly give you more options for your profile, such as more skins, or maybe you could gain access to very detailed writing tips/exercises. I don't know. I think this one's kind of lame. But I really do like the next one.
2) Okay, so this idea would work out well, methinks. So, as an incentive for more in-depth, helpful critiques, a trophy could be awarded every week for top-reviewer. Not necessarily the quantity of the critiques, as much as it is the quality. Because really, I've seen some of the critiques that some of the 'Hall of Famers' have given, and I really don't think they're worthy of all that fame to tell you the truth. Just my honest opinion. So, if you really looked at the depth of the reviews instead of the quantity of reviews they've given, you'd find that YWS would be put to better use. Because really, YWS it totally awesome right now, but it could be totally awesomer (excuse my poor spelling) if we applied this trophy as an incentive. Possibly even 'Honorable Mention' ribbons and such could be included.
3) And finally, I promise, my last idea: A YWS dictionary. Okay, honestly, I haven't figured out what we would call it yet(certainly not a dictionary-that would be absurd!). But, I was thinking, there's probably a lot of newbies (*cough, cough!* ME! *cough, cough!*) who still don't know a lot of the 'terms' used here on YWS. Like, some of the writing terms in general, such as role-playing, and other such words. So, you know, just another one of my crazy, inane ideas.
Sorry, fresh out of them spontaneous ideas (ew! poor grammar!). But don't cry! I'm sure I'll come up with more by tomorrow morning (or in five minutes) to bug you all about! So, yeah! You all just think about that and get back to me.
<3,

That sounds a lot like the Help & Support Wiki!
http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/help.php
It defines/explains a lot of stuff on YWS.
YWS in its current state is 99.9% awesome. It could only be made more awesome by one thing, and that would be this: a different icon to tell me when I've posted in a thread. This would be really helpful for keeping up with multi-chapter stories that are all in one thread, because I'd be able to see when I'd reviewed it so that I could comment if I saw that the author had posted the next chapter. I'd also be able to skim a forum quickly to see which stories I'd already reviewed, since sometimes I forget the names of stories and accidentally click on it multiple times not realizing I've already posted there. Just a little star or something on the icon to tell me I've replied would be awesome. I think I've seen this feature on other PHPBB forums, but maybe I'm wrong - if it's technically impossible or too time-consuming to implement, I understand, but I think it would be a cool feature. |

Nate, I was at the home page, and then I saw my story on the Featured Works. It's in the Advanced Critique section, and the slideshow is black when it goes to Advanced Critiques because you haven't got a picture for it... did that make sense? Like... if a sci-fi story is a Featured Work, then a picture of a cool lookin' spaceship comes up with the name of the piece? Well, you haven't selected a picture for the Advanced Critiques.
Just thought I'd bring it up.

hey,
I was wondering if you could put a icon under users info, as to whether they're on or off line. Because with all of the different time zones and such, contacting someone while they're online would be easier. |

*raises hand*
I have a slight problem. The "mark all topics read" button doesn't work for me on the main forum pages. At all. I have to go into each individual forum and click the "mark all topics read" link at the top, which gets a little tedious. Is this a problem that other people are experiencing? Is there something that can be done about it? |

Yes, I believe he was joking...
Anyway, often people ask me for critiques or there are stories that I may not be able to read immediately due of time contraints, but would like to take a look at some time in the future. And recently I've been getting a little swamped with a lot of these "to-read's" and I was thinking that some kind of "appointment book" feature would be useful so that I can keep track of all the stories I need/want to read.
