Chapter Two
“Good morning, Sir. Is there anything I can help you with?” I said the next morning in the shop.
John and I were still on our usual no words basis after our fight the night before. Beth had been trying to reason with him all morning in the back of the shop as they got merchandise ready to put in the shop, but he wouldn’t budge. They tried to talk softly, but I could make out every word. He felt as if he needed to protect me and make sure I don’t go off with Peter too soon before I’m emotionally ready.
“I’m fine thank you ma’am,” The customer said.
“That makes absolutely no since, John. She’s been raised. She knows what she’s doing,” Beth’s muffled words said.
John was silent for a moment knowing the whole fight wasn’t his fault.
“Well maybe your right,” He said finally admitting it after several hours of non-stop bickering, “I just don’t want her to go off on the wrong path.”
Beth stopped her work and moved over to John putting her dainty hand on his forearm, “She’s a women now. She’s not a little girl anymore. She’s very mature and I think we need to let her do as she pleases. Peter knows how you feel. That’s why he’s so careful with Anna.”
“Can you take care of the cashier for a while?” John asked.
“Yes.”
John came through the door from the back along with Beth right behind him.
“Can we talk?” John asked pleadingly hoping I would respond.
At first I didn’t respond until Beth’s head nodded for me to go.
“Yes sir.”
We walked along the streets for a while in silence until he found a deserted tree where people wouldn’t bother.
“I know you’re angry with me, Anna. I’m sorry for coming on strong since Mama and Papa died, but it seemed like the right thing to do. I thought you still needed to be raised and protected, but you’re a women now, so I’m going to still protect you, but I know Peter and I trust him. You are mature, but I didn’t want to admit it,” John said.
“I forgive you, John. I love Peter, I really do. I understand it’s hard for you, but it’s hard for all of us.”
I looked over at my brother who’s head was down and his blonde hair covering his eyes.
“Oh I’m so sorry! I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“You didn’t. I just feel like I’m doing something wrong.”
“But your not. Let’s compromise. You start trusting me and I’ll act responsibly. I’ll follow your house rules and not go down the wrong path. I wont be too serious with Peter. I’ll do everything you want. So what are house rules?”
“Let’s see…Peter is not aloud in your room EVER, he can be in the house when your alone, but not in your room, you need to be home at the eleventh hour of the night, and you need to respect me and I’ll respect you.”
“I’ll follow your orders.”
We walked back in the shop and I took my place as the cashier again. The shop had been thoroughly busy most of the day. The Rebekah walked in. For a moment I didn’t recognize anyone was in the store until she came up to the cashier with groceries in her hand.
“Hello, Anna,” She said gently placing the food items on the counter.
“I’ll go get John.”
“No! Wait! I wanted to speak with you, for it’s been forever. I saw you at the ball last night, but I didn’t get a chance to speak. You looked rather beautiful.”
“Thank you. You are too kind,” I replied.
“Anna?” She paused, “John told me you are the only one who knows about the two of us. I know he’s your brother, but please don’t be mad at me,” Rebekah said pleadingly.
“I’m not mad, Rebekah. It’s just going to be different.”
“How?”
“You are going to live with us, you’ll probably have a baby or two…”
“Anna can we talk?”
“What does it look like we are doing?”
“I mean…in private?”
“I’m working,” I said.
“John? Can you come here please?”
Before she finished the sentence, John came into the shop.
“I need to talk to Anna in private. Can you please…?”
“Of course.”
Rebekah took me back to my house, soon to be hers as well. She seemed nervous as she paced up and down my chamber.
“Rebekah…”
“Alright. I’ll tell you. Just give me a second,” She said tears in her eyes.
I waited sitting on my bed watching her pacing my room breathing hard.
“I’m having a baby, Anna,” She finally said.
“What?” I said standing on my feet walking over towards her.
“Please don’t be mad! He doesn’t know!”
“How far?”
“A couple of w-w-weeks!” She said tears streaming down her face, faster and faster.
“When did you and my brother…?”
“Three weeks ago! I’m so ashamed!” She said, “How am I supposed to tell him? He is going to be so shocked and flabbergasted. People are going to find out! My reputation is going to be ruined! Why do you think I was so relieved and excited when he finally asked me to marry him?”
“It’s all going to be okay, Beck. I can take care of everything, but first you have to trust me, alright?”
“What are you going to d-do?”
“I’m going to tell him. I can talk to him and we can figure this all out.”
“A-a-alright. I guess that will be alright.”
“Stay here.”
I ran down the steps and out the door, hearing Rebekah’s sobs from above.
“John we need to talk,” I said once I got into the shop, and all customers had gone. It’s an emergency.”
“Is Rebekah okay?” He said startled at my scared, and pale face.
“In a way,” I replied, “Beth! Can you run the cashier please?”
I took John into the back and he looked confused and annoyed, not going to expect the news I was about to give him. He was going to have no idea and was going to be even more angry that she told me before him and that I figured out about them.
“Anytime now, Anna?”
“Rebekah’s pregnant!” I said standing three inches from his face, trying to keep my voice down.
His face fell and his mouth fell open slightly. Blood rushed to his face, for he realized the bad example he and Rebekah had set for me, and even more, that he was going to be a father.
“Y-y-your kidding, Anna,” his face trying to return to normal after I figured out their secret relationship.
“I’m as serious as hell, John,” I said backing away from his face, “She’s in my bedroom crying at this moment. You must believe me.”
He ran from his startled position and out this shop door. I walked after him, looking at Beth’s confused face. The streets outside were busy and there wasn’t a sign of John.
“Charity!” I said when I saw her blonde hair ahead of me, “Have you seen John?”
“He just ran towards your house. Are you and John fighting again?”
“Not really.”
I walked away, nodding a thank you in her direction and walked quickly to my house. The house was reasonably quiet and I walked up the steps and opened my door.
Rebekah was still sitting on my bed with John standing over here, bending down so his lips could be on hers. Neither of them realized I had entered the room, for they were too into their embrace. John’s hand was gently placed on her stomach.
“John…” Rebekah said finally, “We have work to do.”
“Yes we do, but I don’t want to concentrate on that now.”
“Will you ever?! We broke God’s word. If people find out…”
“We can get married in a week, people can thing you got pregnant when we did it after we were married and the baby can come early.”
“Are you ready for this, John? It’s so unexpected. I’m so sorry I couldn’t tell you. I had no idea you would react like this. Anna’s the only one I thought I could tell.”
“It’s okay. I just feel horrible.”
His lips crushed on hers and she leaned back on my bed. He seemed to catch up with her quickly.
“Alright, alright…” I said finally before anyone could do anything else.
“Anna!” John yelled.
“Do what you want, but I find it a bit revolting about you two doing this in my bedroom, so if you don’t mind…”
“Oh, oh, of course,” Rebekah said embarrassed, “I should be going back home anyway. Mother will want to start on my dress.”
John kissed her on the cheek and she left the room. John stood there quietly and then moved towards me and wrapped his arms around me giving me a hug, which he never did. I leaned my head on his shoulder and after a while I broke the hug and looked at him. Tears glistened in his eyes and were running slowly down his cheek. Then I realized that he was not as okay with this as he had seemed to be.
