Some Kind of City: Cal's Sentient City Contest

About

I have created another table of doom, in the contest you will pick five of the words from the table to use as prompts. You can write in any format you want: script, poetry, story, etc. This contest has to do with a city, so pick at least one picture from the lot. In each short/poem, the main character or narrator must be the city.

I am also hosting another contest, at the same time as this contest, if you commit to this contest, you CANNOT commit to the Amidships contest.

Here is an example of a short that I wrote. Or you can look around at the entries from my other contests for examples.

Length: These are meant to be short pieces, I don't except five, fully completed stories, so don't stress yourselves out.

Word count: There are no restrictions on word count.

Timeline: ANY TIME, PLACE, OR FIGMENT OF REALITY YOU WANT IT TO BE IN.

NEW Deadline: Saturday, December 6, 11:59 PM

Rules

> no more/no less than five entries per person
> must use atleast one picture and five words
> main character/narrator must be a city
> entries must be proofread or I might send you to that special hell.
> Have Fun!

How to Post

Post your entries in the proper sub-forum on YWS, e.g. Dramatic Poetry or Historical Fiction. You can post them as one entry or multiple entries. Then post the link(s) to your entry here or PM me the link(s). Somewhere in your entry or post here what five word prompts and what picture(s) you are using. You can also PM you entries if you don't want anyone but me and my guest judges to look at them.

Prizes

Judging is based on all those good writerly things, as well, including plot, characterization, diction, style, description, imagery, syntax, symbolism, etc.

First -- Three of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix. To see an example of a fanmix click here.
Second -- Two of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.
Third -- One of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.

Quote:
There is something new in the prize department this month. You can switch out a fanmix for a NaNoWriMo Playlist and NaNo Art.

There are also guest judges that are helping me out.

    gyrfalcon
    chocoholic
    Galerius
    Conrad Rice

Table of Doom

Sorry, I can't figure how to input the table, so you'll have to open it up in another window or tab. This is actually a mini table; I cut the prompt words to choose from in half.

You can also download the table to your computer: click here.

All the pictures are in the spoiler cut.

Hey Cal! So we have to write five pieces about one city, or can we write five about five different cities?

Wait. The character has to BE the city? Or be in it?

Whichever way you want, as long as each piece has a city and a word.

The character has to be the city.

Hope I answered your questions.

I really want to enter but my first instinct is to use Dalkey as I know the place inside out... but the question is, where do the bounds of Dalkey end and the rest of Dublin begin? It's not really a city and as such I would feel like I was cheating if I used it... in any case, I probably wouldn't be finished... although I did just scribble some ideas that could work... hm...

I'd say, having been to Dalkey, that the bounds of Dalkey end at the edge of Dalkey town proper. That is probably no help isn't it? But, if the picture inspired you to write about Dublin as a whole, that is fine too, as long as you make that known to me at the beginning of your entry(s). I hope that cleared up some things.

Ta,
Cal.

Question:Must it be the city itself or can it be like a spirit of the city, I've been struggling with this.

with all due respect,

Mackenzie,

It can be either the city itself or the spirit of the city, as long as we are talking about the personification of an inanimate object, i.e. the city. I hope that explains things.

Ta,
Cal.

Are poems, scripts, and stream-of-consciousness allowed?
