Hey guys, a few things before you start reading. Like I said before - I'm going to be rewriting the first like... 6 chapters. And I have always been wanting to do the story in third person. d; So, this chapter I finally did! So there's that. Second, there's only one more chapter left): But then I'm off to start the sequel. In the mean time, I'll be working on my other book called 'Secrets of Desperation'. So look out for that!(: Also, this chapter was six pages in word, so I completely understand if some of you are like "That's too long!" Well, it kind of needed to be - I couldn't just end it in the middle. Haha...
Evie sat along the side of hotel’s pool, sipping an iced tea. This morning she took a drive around the city, looking for things to do. After circling a few blocks she came back bored. Evie was bored on my last day of vacation. ‘How sad is that?’ She thought.
She took another sip of her iced tea and sat up. She needed to spend time with the people she came here with. Evie needed to bring them together, but how? Aaron and her weren’t speaking, Brad wants to be with Carly who doesn’t want anything to do with him, so putting them together sucked.
Evie got up and walked over to the pool and splashed some water on her legs and arms after getting too hot. She stood up and stretched, racking her brain for ideas. So far, they’ve been swimming, rode rides, shopped, and clubbed. Was there anything else to Miami? Evie walked back over to her bag and took out her cell phone. It was precisely 12:47 p.m. and she hasn’t heard a word from Carly.
Evie finished up her iced tea and then sent a mass text message to Brad, Carly, and Aaron:
‘Meet me at the hotel’s lobby in twenty minutes.’
Carly and Brad stepped out of the elevators after receiving Evie’s text message. They were curious as to what she had in mind for what they should do on their last day in this wonderful town.
Brad’s hand mingled with Carly’s, his fingers tangling with hers. Carly looked up at him. His hair has become a little lighter ever since they arrived in Miami and a little longer. He was much tanner, he also seemed taller. Carly looked back at their hand and thought. When they first came to Miami, she was completely in love with Brad Kesol - what happened? Was it Miami that changed her heart? Was it Bella? Or was it that she truly didn’t ever love Brad? Carly quickly jumped thoughts before she became too upset: What did Evie have in mind?
Aaron’s cell phone started to violently vibrate in his jeans pocket. He stood up from the bench before he reached in his pocket. He flipped open his phone to read Evie’s text message. Maybe she got his letter! A rain of hope over came Aaron as he started for the hotel from the music festival he’s been at all morning.
Aaron darted passed random people on the boardwalk before entering the back entrance of the hotel. He squeezed in between more tourists as he walked towards the lobby. Once he arrived, all that hoped that penetrated inside of him was stripped clean and all that was left behind was sorrow. He saw Evie, of course. But he also saw Brad and Carly. Evie either has not read the letter, or she has and doesn’t care.
Aaron made his way up to them all and gave the same expression to Evie as Carly and Brad were: what?
“Hey guys.” Evie smiled, when her eyes met Aaron’s she quickly darted them away. Aaron didn’t move his eyes from her though. He couldn’t - she was who he loved.
“Hey, what’s this about?” Brad asked. Carly and Brad were thinking the same thing.
“Guys! This is our last full day in Miami! We should spend it together - the last thing we did together was go to the boardwalk!” Evie reasoned, trying to get everyone to agree. Carly thought about it and Evie was right. They brought all of their problems with them and we’re too caught up in them to even spend time with each other.
“I agree.” She firmly stated.
“Yeah, me too.” Brad agreed. Aaron just nodded his head. Evie smiled at their responses, then continued.
“I have an idea what we should do. I think it’d be fun to go have lunch out on the boardwalk and possibly make a stop at the famous ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’. I think it will be fun!” Evie clasped her hands together, smiling.
“Yeah! I’m up for that, I love Ripley’s!” Carly jumped up with excitement. Carly and her family had a habit of going to the beach every chance they had and she loved to go to the boardwalk to visit Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Brad shrugged, not caring either way and Aaron just kept quiet.
“So... everyone’s in?” Evie made sure, looking at all of them. Everyone nodded. “Sweet! Where do you guys want to go to first? Lunch?” Evie asked as they started to walk out the back doors of the hotel and onto the bustling boardwalk. Carly walked beside her and as always, walked with a little pep in her step. Aaron trudged behind with Brad at his side, his hands in his pockets.
“Yes! I’m starved!” Carly dragged onto her words, trying to keep up pace with Evie’s long strides.
“Same here.” Brad called from behind them, stretching his arms out as he walked.
After a few minutes of walking, they all stopped in front of a little pizza shop that sat on the roof of an old building. They all climbed the stairs and were seated away from all the other customers in the front. Carly raced to one chair by the fence as Evie made her way to the one across from Carly.
“No!” Carly whispered, kicking Evie under the table with her leg. Evie looked quizzically at her, then saw Brad advancing his way to the chair next to her. Evie tried to casually walk around the table to get there before him without making it noticeable that she was trying. Brad walked up and sat down just as Evie was about to reach out for it. Carly sighed inwardly as Brad scooted his plastic deck chair closer to hers. Evie felt bad for not getting there quicker, but just shrugged it off and went back to where she was going to sit in the first place.
“Is it alright if I sit next to you?” Evie looked up and saw Aaron looking down at her, his hand on the plastic chair next to her.
“Yeah, that’s fine.” Evie smiled up at him. She felt awful for what she said to him when he asked to forget their moment together. But thinking about that was a bad subject, so she switched her train of thoughts.
“Should we share a pizza or get our own dishes?” Carly asked, browsing the menu’s that their waiter gave them.
“Sharing a pizza’s cheaper.” Evie stated logically.
“Yeah - you’re right. Are you guys cool with sharing a pizza?” Carly asked, looking around the table. Evie placed her hands in between her legs as the ocean breeze picked up and the air became chillier.
“Yeah I’m cool with it.” Brad shrugged, taking off his hat that he had placed on backwards to shake his hair out of his eyes.
“I’m not really that hungry...” Aaron quietly stated which was another way of saying he didn’t care.
“Yes you are.” Everyone looked up at Carly who narrowed her eyes at him. “You will eat a slice, boy. You’re way too skinny.” Carly smiled. Aaron chuckled and Brad laughed. Evie sat quiet, looking out at the sea.
“Okay, okay. I’ll eat a slice.” He smiled at her and then slouched back in the chair. Carly discussed pizza toppings with Brad as Evie continued to think.
“I have to use the bathroom.” Carly randomly stated after they ordered.
“Lovely.” Evie smirked, leaning against the railing of the open deck.
“So do I.” Brad stated, his face scrunched up.
“How? You guys haven’t drank anything?” Evie asked, leaning forward onto the table.
“I don’t know. It just popped up.” Carly laughed, rising from the table.
“Same here.” Brad laughed, joining Carly.
“Are you sure you guys aren’t just running off to be with each other?” Evie teased.
“No!” Brad laughed. From behind, Carly gave Evie a disgusted look and then rolled her eyes and walked off to the bathroom. Evie laughed to herself but then realized she was now alone with Aaron. She leaned against the railing again, looking down at the boardwalk.
Aaron wanted to talk to Evie about her week and if she was having fun, but he didn’t know if she read the letter yet or not. He didn’t want to act like nothing went wrong. He felt as if he took advantage of Evie that night, like he rushed her into doing something that never even crossed her mind. Even if he didn’t push her, he felt it. He felt responsible and didn’t want to ever talk about it. When he told Evie he wanted to forget all about it, he never realized it meant so much to her.
“So...what have you done today?” Evie asked, breaking the silence between them.
“Um.” Aaron cleared his throat before continuing, “I’ve been at this music festival all morning. You?” He asked, not looking up at her.
“I’ve been lounging around by the pool area.” Evie and Aaron both thought of the night when Aaron had thrown Evie into the pool with him. Evie chuckled to herself and Aaron smiled.
“That’s fun.” He stated, still thinking about that night.
“Yeah...so. What college do you want to go to?” Evie turned towards him. ‘Geeze, Carly, how long does it take to pee?’ Evie thought to herself as the uncomfortable tension grew.
“I actually don’t know yet. I don’t even know what I want to do when I graduate. I think I might take a year off and work with my dad, make some money. What about you?” He asked.
“I want to move to the city and get involved with photography, actually. I might check out some division one colleges. I want to make sure the sports there are good.” Evie explained, thinking about what she’s worked for for so long now.
“It’s neat that you have a goal set for yourself.” He responded, nodding his head.
“Come on, Aaron. You’re an honor roll student, you’ll get into any college you apply for.” Evie tried to convince him to go instead of taking a year off.
“It’s not whether I get in or not...it’s how I can pay for it.” He responded quietly. Evie felt she just talked about a touchy subject and pushed it aside for now.
“Hey.” Was Carly’s way of announcing she was back from using the bathroom.
“Hi.” Evie turned her attention to her.
“Where’s Brad?” Carly asked, sitting down.
“I don’t know, I thought you knew. Maybe he’s still in the bathroom.” Evie shrugged.
“Damn...” Everyone heard Aaron whisper. Carly and Evie laughed at this.
“Back!” They all jumped at the chipper voice of Brad.
“Why are you so happy?” Carly asked.
“I feel relieved.” He teased, patting his stomach. We all gave a grossed out look and went back to minding our own business.
“Here you go, enjoy your time!” The vendor cheerily stated as all four seniors walked through the entrance with their Ripley’s tickets.
“Where do you want to go first?” Carly asked them, leading ahead of everyone.
“Well, there is only one path.” Brad chuckled.
“Sometimes you can go other ways.” Carly placed a hand on her hip, giving Brad a matter of factly look. Brad shook his head and chuckled. Aaron and Evie kept quiet in the back, not really caring either way.
“You want to just go?” Evie asked Aaron while Brad and Carly continued to debate. Aaron laughed and agreed and they headed off into Ripley’s.
“Whoa!” Evie stated as she read about the 1,064 lb man. “That’s so weird!” She stated, burrowing her eyebrows as she read more of the heavy set man. “He died at age 32 and was one thousand, sixty-four pounds!” Evie gasped out loud to inform Aaron.
“That’s...strange?” Aaron stated, not really knowing what to say.
“Come on, lets see how many people it takes to match his weight!” Evie grasped Aaron’s hand and dragged him on the weight machine that held a bunch of other people. “It’s only at 976 lbs.” Evie pouted, then counted to see that there were only ten people on the weight machine.
“Well, I’m guessing that it’s only going to take a few more. Want to go to the next station?” Aaron suggested as he was being pushed closer to Evie since more people were entering the weight machine.
“Sure.” Evie squeezed through people until she stumbled off the machine, Aaron right behind her.
“What about this - this man could reach his tongue to the center of his nose.” Aaron read aloud at the next station.
“Oh yeah! I remember this, then you go to the mirror and try it yourself!” Evie laughed as she looked into the mirror, squinted her eyes and pushed her tongue as far up as it would go. “Damn it.” Evie pouted as her tongue didn’t even reach her nose. She looked over to see Aaron concentrating really hard at the mirror, his tongue actually touching the tip of his nose.
“Sweet.” He smiled. Evie burst into laughter and they carried onto the next station.
“What’s this?” Aaron asked as they were getting close to ending the tour.
“Um, I’m not sure.” Evie looked into the window Aaron was talking about to see people making goofy faces at them. “The sign says...oh my god. It’s the tongue thing - it was a three way mirror!” Evie’s face flushed with embarrassment. Aaron broke out into fists of laughter.
“Look! Carly and Brad!” Aaron pointed and laughed as they saw Carly and Brad on the other side of the mirror, attempting to touch their nose with their tongues.
“Why are they there? Shouldn’t they be farther?” Evie asked as she laughed and took a picture of them with her cell phone. She placed the words ‘I see you!’ under the picture and sent it to Carly.
“Maybe Carly was right, maybe there is another way to get through this place.” Aaron shrugged, watching as Carly flipped open her phone. Carly’s eyes widened and she turned to the mirror. Evie’s phone started to ring as Carly was calling her.
“You can see me?!” Carly gasped from the other side of the window.
“Yeah!” Evie laughed, leaning towards Aaron so he could hear.
“Oh my gosh - this is so embarrassing! Brad stop attempting, Aaron and Evie are on the other side watching us!” Aaron laughed and Evie watched as Carly pushed Brad away from the mirror.
“So there really was another way?” Evie asked as they walked away from the window.
“Yeah - there’s three actually.” Carly responded. Evie heard Brad talking about a woman who was seven feet tall in the background.
“Oh. Well, we’re near the end so we’ll wait for you outside.” Evie stated as they came close to the entrance. “Dude, it’s already dark out!” Carly stated as they exited the building. “How many hours has it been?” She asked Aaron as she hung up her phone.
“Um. Well, we arrived around two, it’s now 5:26. Jesus!” Aaron exclaimed at his own answer.
“Wow. I hate when time flies.” Evie pouted as they sat down at a bench.
“Yeah. But it only does when you’re having fun!” Aaron chuckled, slouching next to her on the bench. Evie stretched and yawned, tired from the busy hours that just passed.
“Tired?” Aaron asked, turning to her.
“Yeah, I’m so not ready to go back. It’s too much fun here.” Evie crossed her legs on the bench.
“Yeah. It is relaxing-” Aaron was cut off when he heard Evie’s phone go off.
“Oh hold on, it’s Carly.” Evie placed a finger up and opened her phone. “Yeah?” She asked.
“I broke up with Brad.” Carly cried on the other line.
