|
|
Judging this contest was extremely difficult. Everyone submitted such clean, thorough creative pieces! In fact, it took me about a half hour after reading each entry to determine the placing for this Spark!. Jared, unfortunately you are disqualified, but it was a good poem regardless. So without further ado:
Honorable Mention: I Am Awake by Angel of Death. This was a wonderful poem, very Angel-esque. It addressed the picture and the history of the burning monk thoroughly and completely and had strong opening/closing stanzas. In particular, I enjoyed the final stanza. it neatly tied all of Angel's ideas and concepts using subtle methods, which is exactly what I was looking for. This piece would've taken third place, but I felt the required words could have been used more effectively and that less actual historical reference could have been made.
Third Place: Incisive Coalition by PenguinAttack. Superb. I enjoyed how this poem danced around the issues for a while and chose to address the persecutor more than the burning monk - a unique perspective. The required words were used to enhance this poem and I found the imagery used by Penguin fantastic. However, I didn't quite get the gist of things and I think this is in part because of some typos maybe? Anyway, good work.
Second Place: Blaze by Jiggity. Very trendy, very experimental and different, this piece was a strong contender for first place. I loved how Jiggity decided to take a more oblique route and transformed the character and the setting into a giant metaphor. I also liked the structure of the story itself: rapid paced with staccato time sequences. I was taken aback by the professional vibe this piece gave off, but again, I think some of the meanings went over my head, such as what the nun gave the main character to eat at the very end. But wonderful, none the less.
First Place: evangelical evangelists have eaten all our food againby Sam. I died from happiness when I read this poem and then resurrected myself to judge this contest. It had everything I was looking for. References to the Catholic religion and Buddhist beliefs. Tasty metaphors, the right balance between obscurity and meaningfulness. If you haven't read it yet, do so. There's a reason Sam is one of my favorite authors.
Anyway, good work everyone. If you have a prize critique request PM it to me along with a link.
PS: The next Spark! begins soon! Get those carpal tunnel-inflicted fingers ready!

In the spirit of the recent contest frenzy and because I like being a ruthless judge, I've decided to host a series of contests. Each individual Spark! will have one prompt, a single picture, and the span of a eight days to submit a story in response to photo and prompt to me.
[you light me on fire]
The prompt: Write a story or poem based on the photograph below. It could relate directly to the content of the picture or could vaguely mention some form of the content (within reason). You must however use each of these words in your entry:
(1) vivisect
(2) burlesque
(3) masquerade
The picture:
The background: June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Buddhist monks asked the regime to lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag, to grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism, to stop detaining Buddhists and to give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion.
While burning Thich Quang Duc never moved a muscle.
Prizes:
First Place: Three of my best critiques
Second Place: Two of my best critiques
Third Place: One of my best critiques
Honorable mention: A hearty pat on the back
DISCLAIMER:
The contest will be cancelled if fewer than three people enter a tangible piece of work!
Deadline and word length:
Ends Sunday September 14th
Word length really doesn't matter to me, but since this contest is only eight days long, I would prefer fiction entries to be flash (meaning under 1,000 words). I don't care how long your poem is.
Happy writing!
-Kylan

Wow. That picture's disturbing.
Anyway. Because I'm stoopid and dun know what all of this means:

Can I use the same concept, but in another way? Like... have some sort of a priest sacrafice himself for his religion? Because I'm not really interested in Buddhism and that culture. So, can I make it in a different way? If I can, I'd gladly do this.

Sure. Like I said, it can be as vaguely related to the prompt and photo as you'd like.
The background I gave was just to help people put the picture into context.

I'm working on my entry right now! We focused a ton on this stuff in U.S. History last year. It's so fascinating, and sad. I'll have my entry up soon |

It's possible that I might enter this.
Possible.
I'm quite sick at the moment, but should I get better within the timeframe - granted enough motivation as well - then, naturally, I shall provide a piece. |

Haha, indeed, that was quite the entry.
I have constructed my own, though.
Since I no longer post my stories on YWS though, is it okay if I PM it to you, Kylan? |

I don't believe anyone else will be entering (talk to me if you have an entry by tomorrow, Jared), so I'm closing the contest now.
Besides, it's 1 AM in Greenwhich.
Results will be posted tomorrow or monday and Spark! #2 will begin.

I TOTALLY didn't see that part. *dies* Oh well. I guess I'm disqualified?
Well, I'll try the next one, and read all the rules. So sorry.
