For the seventh event, participants had to respond to one of two paintings: either "The Art of Delivering Justice," which won an Australian Art Competition, or "Dido Building Carthage." While I didn't intend it to be so, many find this to be the hardest of the events.

Confusion reigned over whether to write about the painting, respond to it, or write a story about a character. In the end, any response was fine, although creativity got major points.

The winners are:

Gold: PenguinAttack for Where have our colours gone?

Silver: Cade for Suppose

Bronze: Tatra for Untitled

Congrats to all who participated!

PenguinAttack

They touch upon our colour; heathens of the land using the pigments they should never have seen.

Beauty exists in the structure, the arcs and triumphs, the slippery silver of those corrugated canals. Their bridges cannot reconstruct ours. There is beauty in the words they sing and the moves they dance. They cannot replace ours. There is beauty in them. They have stolen ours.

Sire, she mocks, gentleman and ladies, the court - what are these terms they use against us? The Rainbow Snake is twisted in her hands; they mangle our lands and let not the great Snake build that which he willed. The mountains are no longer shaped by his curves. The rivers do not form by the weight of his belly. They die, alone.

Tiddalik has swallowed all the water once more and we are dying. Where is the kookaburra to sing her song, where is the emu, the lizard? Where is the eel for the dance? Make the frog laugh, white woman, make him laugh and let our land live again.

I am sad and I will play for you, children of the Dreamtime, I will play for you and tell the white man, the white woman, whose snake they kill.

Cade

I might compose you. I might
transcribe your bones into tones,
skin into song. I don't write
music but I can draw a treble clef
as well as anybody else, and I am
a master of translation, mistress of
contemplation and orchestration.
I might draw you the way I draw
a half note, slim and empty and
sweet with melody. I might
compose you a begging beginning,
a trembling ending. I can draw you
as well as anybody else. Maybe even
better. I might compose you, expose
you, and transpose you.

Tatra

Sunlight streamed through the windows as Cami gasped in awe. She was spellbound as the courtroom set up for its drama. The judge raised his conductor’s wand and the music started, beginning the trial.

The prosecutor danced with confident strides, moving in time with music. She held up the key piece of evidence for the case before she twirled into a spin.

The courtroom artist painted as the play went on. A scene of the tragic crime started to take place on his canvas--a shadowy figure holding up the circle of rope. The artist glanced back at his model as the prosecutor danced her way through the law’s interpretation of the crime.

Cami slid a glance over to the orchestra. Their dark playing enhanced the drama of the trial, never missing a beat as they watched the movements on stage. Their job was as important as the Judge’s, making sure that their opinions were heard and justice was done.

The front of the room was the best part of the show; it was where Cami wanted to be when she grew up. The judge waved his wand as he oversaw the production of the trial. To his right sat the scales of justice: a symbol of their justice. On his other side typed the scribe, capturing every word spoken and describing every move made.

A cool wind flowed through the open courtroom as the art of delivering justice continued.
