Some Kind of Character: Cal’s Character Contest
First I want to thank all of you guys, even if you didn't finish. I also want to thank you guys for being so nice and silent about the fact that it took forever to score, I have been uber busy. Kylan and I scored this contest like so: (-) minus for maybe, (0) zero for okay, (+) for yea; each of those got a number, there were some 0+ and ++, the extra plus counts as .5.
Now for the results!
Third Place goes to HC.
Second Place goes to KaliaMarie.
First Place goes to Sam.
Judges Choice Awards
I will be contacting the winners asap. For those who are interested.

About
I have created another table of doom, in the contest you will pick five of the words from the table to use as prompts. As well as picking five words, there are pictures to choose from, choose any number of them to use as a starting point. You can write in any format you want: script, poetry, story, etc. Your story has center around one character or be some kind of character study. It can be five different characters or the same character five times.
I am also hosting a fantasy contest as the same time as this contest, if you commit to this contest, you CANNOT commit to the fantasy contest.
Character Study: An in depth story of a certain character explaining his/her history or point of view.
Here is an example of a short that I wrote. Or you can look around at the entries from my other contests for examples.
Length: These are meant to be short pieces, I don't except five, fully completed stories, so don't stress yourselves out.
Word count: There are no restrictions on word count.
Timeline: ANY TIME, PLACE, OR FIGMENT OF REALITY YOU WANT IT TO BE IN.
NEW Deadline: 11:59 PM September 1st, 2008
Rules
> no more/no less than five entries per person
> must center around one character or be a character study
> entries must be proofread or I might send you to that special hell.
> Have Fun!
How to Post
Post your entries in the proper sub-forum on YWS, e.g. Dramatic Poetry or Historical Fiction. You can post them as one entry or multiple entries. Then post the link(s) to your entry here or PM me the link(s). Somewhere in your entry or post here what five prompts and what pictures you are using. You can also PM you entries if you don't want anyone but me and my guest judges to look at them.
Prizes
Judging is based on all those good writerly things, as well, including plot, characterization, diction, style, description, imagery, syntax, symbolism, etc.
First -- Three of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix. To see an example of a fanmix click here.
Second -- Two of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.
Third -- One of Cal's Proper Critiques and a fanmix.
Basically, the same prizes as my last contest.
There are also guest judges that are helping me out.
Table of Doom & Picture Prompts
Sorry, I can't figure how to input the table, so you'll have to open it up in another window or tab. This is actually a mini table; I cut the prompt words to choose from in half.

You can also download the table to your computer: click here.

Cal, these have to be the best contests in the world because they actually get me to write! You can be sure I'll play, at least a little, in this one.
And I'm ready with questions! ^_~ Do we have to use the pictures/are there any requirements revolving around the pictures? Does it matter if it is five studies of one character, or one study of five characters?
You make the sporadic writer inside me happy! |

Count me in!
One question, although I think I'm going to do this anyway: Pictures and table, or pictures or table?
I hope you don't mind the first one. xD I've got some ideas already thinking that way.
Edit: Oh! And... can the character be made a character through personification? Like... inanimate objects and such?

There are no requirements on the pictures, I just thought they'd be useful. I've put in a clause because Sam told me about it, and it can be one character five times or five different characters, or whatever you want.

Picture and/or table. Though, I secretly hope that pictures are used or are at least some help.

Yes! That would be awesome.

I'm going to do my best to enter this. In fact, I've chosen the pictures, titled each piece and written the first one, so you should see something for me this time!
I'm a bit confused, do we have to use the table? Because I'm doing it with just pictures, one inspiring each story. |

Your contests are amazingly inspiring, Cal. I will do my best to enter.
A few questions, though: Can the stories have a first person narrator? Are they supposed to be linked together?
That's all for now

Usually, I'd say you have to use the table. But, because I've got pictures this time, and you've already done your thing, I'm saying yes, you don't have to use the table.
Saint,
YAY!

Yes, to the first question. They don't have to be linked together if you don't want them to be.
Stella,
Think happy thoughts.
I hope I've answered everyone's questions.
Ta,

| I think I might join, but does the word we choose from the table have to be the central focus of the piece? Like, if I used "fear" would the whole story have to be about fear or do I just have to use the word once or twice? |

No, the word from the table doesn't have to be the central focus. You can use it however you want. It can be the central focus or you can use it in the piece, or it can simply be inspiration or a starting point.
I hope that explains it.

Okay - thanks for clearing things up, Cal.
You can count me in
Oh, and one more question, just to be a pain: Does it matter whether the 5 pieces are the same length? Would it be all right to make them very different? I think it might add a nice touch, and just wanted to clearify whether it's ok.

Tess,
It doesn't matter how long the pieces are, just that they have substance. I've had anywhere from two sentence to 25 page entries before.
